If winning the Triple Crown isn't a big deal why was it 45 years between occurrences? And his team went to the playoffs. If its all about WAR have a WAR Crown. MVP has always been subjective.quote:Originally posted by Three Bagger:
Must be the same traditionalists who voted for Cabrera for MVP!
We already hashed the reasons:
A. Detroit is in a weaker division
B. California had a better record but played stronger teams
C. After Trout joined the team, the Angels had an even better record vs. the Tigers playing in that dog division.
D. RBI's are not quite as valuable as runs scored
E. Finally, anyone that thinks Batting Average and RBI's are two of the most important baseball stats is a dinosaur!
F. The forty-five years does make it a novelty but that's about all especially when I almost gagged watching Cabrera play third base in the Series and huff and puff to get balls that a good college player could get to. I like my MVP's to actually be able to do something, anything on the part of the game called defense and baserunning. Watching his five minutes worth of AB's is a pleasure as he is a great hitter, but the rest of the time I would just as soon watch Manny. At least he was funny on defense and baserunning.

Bottom line ...
1) Did the Tigers make the playoffs? Yes
2) Did the Angels make the playoffs? No
3) Is it written the MVP is based on best WAR? No, it's a subjective award. Voters love the long ball.

I'm not sure how "unusual" things are when this is the second time in two years it has happened.
I also think it's sad when a team is in a bowl game after their head coach is fired for underperformning....
There is a general rule that a team must have at least a .500 record to be bowl eligible, so it is an unusual set of circumstances when it does occur.
I think it's "six wins".

Really? With runners on second and third, a single to the right side is better than a solo home run.
biggerpapi, I mean as an individual event. You can score a run with no help from teammmates. Cabrera would have hit 45 solo HRs with no help from teammates. That's why a guy like Kirk Gibson could be MVP batting third for a team when he bats in 76 RBI's. The voters didn't concern themselves with RBI's that year.
Of course you guys want to ignore WAR, since it does take in fielding and baserunning and everyone of you guys in favor of Cabrera HAVE to ignore anything to do with those very important aspects to even have a case. When Cabrera puts down that bat, he wouldn't be the most valuable player on a good high school team. Disprove that statement.
Of course you also try to acrt like WAR is the only thing that Trout was superior in but as EdgarFan and JH showed numerous different ways, Trout was superior in virtually EVERYTHING that has any meaning except a team concept stat(RBI's) which probably makes since when one guy bats third and the other leadoff, an outdated overvaluing of batting average that if you insist is one of the three most important stats, then you don't know enough baseball to be in this type of discussion and Hrs which I will admit are very important.
RJM, just as you said some traditionalists were not in favor on Manziel getting the Heismann as a Freshamn--I hope you aren't one of them. That's about the most narrow minded outlook I've heard. Seasonal awards are not about whether a player has done his time in past years or been good for a long time or has to be a Junior or senior. They are about who was the best player that year and helped his team the most. Trout and Manziel both fit the bill.
Just once I would like to see one of you guys show that you are willing to offer something better than "Well it's been a long time since the Triple Crown was won", when in fact when Triple Crowns were being won more reasonably more often the voters often knew enough not to automatically give the MVP to the winner. You can ask Ted Williams about that.
If you don't start at least exploring new aspects of baseball statistical analysis soon, you guys are going to have a hard time being in any serious conversation above the college level in about ten years.
