I was speaking with a MLB scout last week and the conversation revolved around a D1 (low level) public school head baseball coach. Some of the rules of the baseball program are as follows:
1. All recruits must have a 2.80gpa & 20 ACT
2. No tattoos for recruits or players. If the coach notices one the player is removed from the team.
3. no facial hair
4. short & neat hair
5. A player miss 1 game for each class they miss without the permission of the head coach
6. all fresh/soph/jr players must attend study time from 7:30pm-9:00pm
7. players must wear a shirt with a collar that is tucked into pants/shorts with a belt around campus (no caps may be worn inside a building)
8. players clean & polish their shoes after each practice & games
9. players take turns doing the team laundry after practice & games
10. players clean the clubhouse after each game & practice
11. players must take and pass a minimum of 15 hours per semester
As a parent this seems great but will he be able to convince the most talented players & their parents that discipline is a good thing for them?

How long has the guy been at the school and how successful has he been (or been at past schools)? These two questions will tell you all you need to know. Plus there is nothing wrong with discipline and if more places had it then we wouldn't have situations like what's going on with USC. If a kid won't come to a school because of a coach having discipline then that kid probably won't make it. He will find places that will look the other way for a while but at some point he will run out of chances.

As for the list of rules I can see #2 being tougher to follow as society has become more accepting of tattoos. I think more and more players will start getting them. I now the law (most places) says you can't get them until 18 but I got kids in class who have them and they're not even close to 18. Not saying it's a bad rule but it's going to be tough to follow.

I'm not a big fan of #7 because you can look nice without having to dress up in a collared shirt. I like the no hats in buildings rule though.

But those are my opinions and if this guy has these rules and he's successful then more power to him. It's his program and he can run it how he sees fit.

1. All recruits must have a 2.80gpa & 20 ACTA lot of schools have these standards
2. No tattoos for recruits or players. If the coach notices one the player is removed from the team. Might be hard to get many recruits since tattooes are so popular. but not an outlandish request.
3. no facial hair A little overboard
4. short & neat hair not unreasonable
5. A player miss 1 game for each class they miss without the permission of the head coach No a bad idea
6. all fresh/soph/jr players must attend study time from 7:30pm-9:00pm Most schools have this type of requirement
7. players must wear a shirt with a collar that is tucked into pants/shorts with a belt around campus (no caps may be worn inside a building)The collared shirt thing is a little ridiculous in 2010.
8. players clean & polish their shoes after each practice & games A little ridiculous in any year.
9. players take turns doing the team laundry after practice & games If it's part of the player responsibilities then it sounds like a good way to handle it.
10. players clean the clubhouse after each game & practice Is this in addition to maintaining the field. When do the kids get back to the dorms?
11. players must take and pass a minimum of 15 hours per semester Sounds reasonable considering his entrance standards.
As a parent this seems great but will he be able to convince the most talented players & their parents that discipline is a good thing for them?

This guys is a little too much for me but these standards should be considered way before a kid gets on campus.
I had a coach something like that...no wait, he was a Drill Sgt. A not so talented but disciplined team will win it's share of games. Probably not the "Championships" though. I learned that from Uncle Sam. Have a plan and stick to it you'll be ahead of the game. It has proven true through little league baseball, biddy basketball and bantam football for me. I'd like for my kid to play for a coach like that.
I bet this coach/team doesn't get the top tier recruits. The "Primadona;s" of HS Baseball wouldn't even look at a school with rules like that, right or wrong, it just wouldn't happen. BTW, the big schools all have team managers who have their own crew of student assistants to do laundry and clean up the **** in the club house, not to mention grounds crew.
The first D1 school my son went to, the pitching coach would bring out 2 dozen balls for the game and told the pitchers sitting on the bench that all the foul balls must be found or they were running for every ball that wasnt returned.
The school he attends now, they will give the foul balls to little kids.
The difference in the two schools is astounding.
