I've not posted a lot, but do come to the site quite often to learn and to be informed. Had an interesting situation arise last week with our son that I thought I'd post for any discussion.
Son is a high school sophomore. Played high school ball as a freshman as well and we felt he had a pretty decent shot to make JV this year. Come to find out he didn't...he made the C-Team again. Son never said anything about it, but I couldn't help but be disappointed because I know that he can play at the JV level, no problem.
Went to Disney last week over Spring Break for a JV and Varsity Tournament with the high school team. Son was invited to go, though he is only on the C-Team, because the coaching staff felt they would need some more pitching. As the week developed, son played every single inning for JV. He actually played while many healthy Juniors sat on the bench. Game after game, son got the start for JV. He played 3B, CF, RF, and LF but never ended up pitching through the course of the tournament.
He even hit a two run shot to deep left field in the third game. Had 5 RBI's that game with two runs scored. I think he only struck out once or twice in the four games and had a couple of flyouts and a groundout or two. But he also got several good hits including an in the parker in the last game against a weaker opponent. This isn't really unusual play for him as he always plays competitive.
I really don't want to overthink this, but it has me wondering a little bit. Could this be a case of a better player not making JV because of too many less talented upperclassmen taking up slots? Does that happen quite often depending upon the make-up of the team? I'm really, really glad he got a lot of playing time and was able to play well, but it makes me wonder. I realize that if he continues to play well, that the coaches should find somewhere for him to play, but it's so frustrating sometimes to sit in the stands and keep quiet. But I have, and I will continue to do just that!! I refuse to be "that kind of parent."
