The towel drill can force an athlete to push the ball and create an inefficient hip to trunk relationship. This drill has been used for "pitching" mechanics (not arm strength/speed) but an athlete cannot feel resistance in a throw using a towel, therefore will reinforce a pushing motion.

Using a towel with some added resistance (taped end), may allow an athlete to feel this resistance between the hips and trunk.

In the article below, the bat is used to feel resistance in a throw... it creates separation between the hips and trunk. The trunk turns back against the hips as the hips open up. Sometimes using just a towel, the athlete cannot feel this. Once the throwing pattern has been established, Strength Training, Long Toss & Possible Weighted Baseballs can come in to play depending on the individual, the age, their throwing history, their injury history and their throwing experience.
