Baseball Friends of
Towny Townsend

Christmas Reunion to Recognize and Honor “Coach T”
Thursday, December 28, 2006 – 7:00 pm
Greenbrier Christian Academy Fieldhouse

Towny has enthusiastically given uncounted hours of his time and energy to the baseball community in Tidewater. He is recognized as the man who introduced AAU baseball to our area. Today Tidewater is regarded as a hotbed of baseball talent and Towny had a significant impact on that. Coach T saw the need for an organized league that would attract and produce a more highly skilled level of play than traditional recreation leagues. Players and their families who loved the game of baseball were given the opportunity to make a virtual year round commitment to excellence in baseball. Many high school and college baseball programs benefited as a result. Along the way we had fun, made new friends and created wonderful family memories. We learned life lessons about being part of a team, how to handle winning and losing and about perseverance even when it’s difficult. Several of Coach T’s players even transcended amateur sport and developed promising professional careers. Whether our participation in baseball ended with graduation or continues today, we all benefited from Towny’s involvement in our son’s lives.

Please come out and join us. Renew some old friendships with Coach T and other coaches, players and their families.

Last night's Baseball Friends of Towny Townsend social was a tremendous testimonial to the influence Towny has had on the baseball community in South Hampton Roads. We had approximately 250 people in attendance. Many of these folks were former players and their parents, fellow coaches, umpires and teammates of Coach T.

I want to thank all of the people who came and honored Towny and his family, the folks who helped spread the word, the folks who brought food, the folks who were bold enough to stand up and share funny and often times touching stories about their coach, teammate and friend. Make no mistake Coach T was outstanding in his comments in response to everyone. He had us laughing one minute and the next welling up in our throats with emotion as he shared his memories of his mother's battle with cancer.

We had a great time recalling all those memories and renewing old friendships.
My family and I were absolutely overwhelmed by the event thursday evening held at Greenbrier Christian academy.I would also like to thank Bob Nichols, Ron Smith and Gary Lavelle and the many others for their efforts and friendship on my behalf. The photos given and stories told had me running the gamut of feelings and emotions from laughter to love So many times over the last 5 years my teammates, friends, past players, parents and baseball community as a whole have rallied to my aid spiritually, financially, and emotionally. In spite of my circumstances presently I have got to be one of the luckiest guys around and have so much to be grateful for. I am rich in friends and relation ships. I am grateful to so many and truly humbled by the words spoken the other night and if the purpose was to lift my spirits consider the evening a complete succes for my family and I. Know this that there is no quit in me and I expect a miracle. I have no plans on just rolling over. I picture myself coming back from this and seeing another spring of baseball. Once again thanks so much to all who had a part in the most memorable evening of my life.
