My team - the Indians, tanked this year. They traded several veteran players recently (Wickman, Broussard, Belliard, Perez, etc.) for young guys and that is always a cr-ap shoot.

They got lucky a few years ago when they traded Bartolo Colon for Grady Sizemore, Cliff Lee, and Brandon Phillips. They also traded CoCo Crisp in the off season for Andy Marte and the book is still out on him.

But I'm still waiting for them to get rid of Randy Johnson.

Not sure who would take him or why, but stranger things have happened. They are still paying that Ken Brown or Bobby Brown or what ever that stiffs name is that sucked so bad before they got Johnson. Chacon was horrible.

How about Randy Johnson and big cash for David Wells?? Huh?

Pirates did OK. They got rid of some salarys and short timers , don't know much about what they got for them . I watched the game saturday night and at the end they had a lot of good young players on the field and the infield looked really good. I don't know why we just don't bring up our good young players and let them take their lumps till they are ready. It would cost a lot less and the quality of baseball could'nt be that much worse.
The Marlins are doing it and it's working pretty well for them.
The only one we lost that I wonder about a little is Ollie Perez, he was great and all at once he sucked. Something wrong there, he will probably go to New York and become something great. The Pirates seem to have a way of messing up pitchers and when they go somewhere else they turn great.
Gotta say, I'm happy the Red Sox didn't make any rash moves. Rumors about Loretta for Lugo had me nervous for a while, as well as hearing Mike Lowell's name a few times. I was afraid they might do something crazy and dismantle the best infield in the game right now. So, we've got our horses, and hopefully we can ride them to the end.
My Dodgers....
With all due respect to futurebackMom, getting Greg Maddux . Maybe a few years ago, but after starting this season 5-0 he has gone
4-11 and has specifically stated he is NOT coming to the Dodgers to help "school" their youngsters on the staff. He's also a free agent at the end of the year, so he looks like a 2 month rental (assuming he doesn't retire) in exchange for Cesar Izturis and his allstar gold glove. For anyone old enough to remember, this trade reminds me of Lou Brock for Ernie Broglio.

I think Izturis was in the dodger dog house for taking an extra day or two off when his wife gave birth.

Then the boys in blue trade Joel Guzman who just a few months ago was touted as their #1 prospect and he's gone for Julio Lugo, who the dodgers will play at second. Lugo will be a free agent and has already insisted he will go somewhere where he can play shortstop, so again a two month rental for a kid who has played short, third, left and first but is another who went to the dog house when he apparently sulked a bit as the dodgers have called up half the farm system ahead of him while they tried to move him to every position on the field.

the other move was Baez and Aybar to the Braves for Wilson Bentimet (sp?). This may be a good one for both teams.

Dodgers still need to climb out of the cellar of what is possibly the worst division in baseball.
I'm not happy with the Pirates salary dumping at the deadline. I was really expecting them to go the route of the Royals or Phillies & pick up a bunch of prospects to fill out the depleted farm system. Instead, they dumped salary & essentially that was it. They basically traded Craig Wilson for a cheaper Craig Wilson with weaker stats & a head case pitcher with a high ceiling (Oliver Perez) for a head case pitcher with a low ceiling (Chacon). Chacon won his first game for the Bucs last night, so maybe the Pirates' staff knows something about how to improve him (and Nady, too). I dunno. Regardless, I was drooling over the 8 prospects that the Royals got & the 6 that the Phillies got & wondering who's bank account the Pirates' saved $4.2 mil was going to sit in... Oh well...

HeyBatter ...

C'mon now ... are you trying to look at this logically? I'm a mom after all and I have the perogative to think with my heart at times and not my brain. crazy I am just a major fan of Maddux and love to watch the ball move and the batters look as tho they were skunked on the strike. He is masterful and now that he is in Dodger blue, I can get to see him throw every 5th game ... even if he is a rent-a-player.

Loved it last night when the camera had a dugout shot of Maddux talking with pitching coach Honeycutt ... made me wonder who was coaching whom.
I thought Maddux would go back to retire in a Braves uniform. Frown But after last night's game, he's not done yet.

Maddux was traded for his experience with helping the pitching staff, and helping to win the wildcard.

And by the way, not to highjack thread but the MARLINS BEAT THE METS last night. Big Grin
