One of my son's teammates recently left the program and yesterday I had a chance to talk with his Dad. During our conversation he mentioned that his son had entered his name in to the transfer portal and was already receiving inquiries. I had never heard of the transfer portal so thought I would share a recent article I found that provides some insight. Hope it helpful to someone at some point.

My ex-wife entered the portal a few years ago and transferred herself to a new husband. Was a good move for both of us.
Different sport, but my college swimmer entered the portal last spring and literally had emails from other college coaches before she got back to her dorm room. I love that it gives the unhappy athlete some power. Not all bad fits are the athlete's fault. Coaches lie, they overcommit, they coach poorly, they're jerks. The portal gives the athlete an alternative to quitting her sport.
When my son entered the portal, a couple of things happened: First, there are many small schools that recruit heavily off the portal. Second, once the big schools saw he was in the portal, they knew they were open to talk to him. Even the big schools that he reached out to and were interested, the first question they had was "are you in the portal yet".

The transfer portal did not exist when my son played D1 college baseball...not that it would have mattered much to him. So, this is very new to me.
After reading the article, I believe this helps the non-athletic scholarship student in a big, big way. First, it gives that preferred or walk-on student an out. Second, it incentivizes the Coach to try to keep a player. Third, it helps balance out some of the power D1 coaches and schools have over D1 college athletes. I still do not like the fact that a D1 coach can leave a program for much greener and richer pastures and the students are still beholden to the school. IMHO, it is still too much power, but this is a good start.

For those who may still be learning about the Transfer Portal like CoachLD, note that the Transfer Portal didn't change anything about the rules for whether an athlete can be immediately eligible at the next university that they transfer to.
If a Division I scholarship athlete (in any sport) transfers to another Division I university, their eligibility to play in their first year of attendance at the next university still depends upon the same factors that have been in place for a number of years. Do they meet the academic standards for a transfer and will the university they are leaving support their transfer?
If a D2 or D3 athlete is looking to transfer to D1, does he need to sit out for a year?

Non Scholarship athletes are now eligible to transfer without sitting. Also, the NCAA seems to be giving kids more and more waivers to be eligible immediately. If a kid is cut, the NCAA is giving those kids immediate eligibility at about a 100% clip, as they should.
D-Mac is right for non-scholarship athletes who are transferring from a program that awards athletic scholarships (almost every D2). For D3's, it will depend on their recruited or non-recruited status.
What options does a D2 non athletic scholarship freshmen player have to transfer without sitting out, after possibly being redshirted or jv'd.
Academic scholarship. Grades fine.
Hello all, quick question. With the pandemic, I know some rules have changed with eligibility and such. If a D1 athlete wants to enter the D1 transfer portal and is NOT on scholarship, how do they do that? And does the current coach have to sign off on that? TIA for any info.
