Transferring Colleges as a Rising Sophomore after the Fall Semester

My question is in regards to NCAA rules on players wanting to transfer from one college program to another. In this case the player is at a D2 school.

I understand that if a player transfers they must sit out one year before they can play at the next college program.

If the player is participating now in the Fall 2010 semester as a student-athlete and then transfers to another college for the Spring 2011 semester. During this semester the student is ineligible to play that Spring 2011 season with the new college.

So my question is, can the student-athlete participate as an athlete in Fall 2011 at the new college? Or did participating in the FAll 2010 semester as a student-athlete at his old college is considered as part of the upcoming Spring 2011 season?

In other words, sitting out Spring 2011 really wasn't considered sitting out because that student-athlete participated in the Fall 2010 semester.

The rules are very different transferring between D2 schools or D1 to D2 as compared to D1 to D1. Your question should be directed to the NCAA or a compliance office at the school your looking to go to.

Start by reading the NCAA Transfer Guide. It doesn't cover every possibility, but it is pretty easy to read.

Most of what you posted only applies to a player transferring to a D1 college.
