I'm currently playing ball at a JUCO.I failed a couple of classes with an "F" grade. I wanted to know how much of a role those "F's" play when it comes to transferring to a Division 1 school. If I graduate in 2 years and still have a decent GPA (atleast a 2.0) will I have options, or will those "F's" hold me back?

I believe that if you take those "F" classes over again and pass them with at least a "B" you can petition to have those "F" grades removed off of your transcripts.

The "F" grades can be an impediment to getting into a D1 level school especially if they are in a core subject that is part of the General Education Requirements curriculum for transfer.
nycpitcher,
my son failed a class at a juco but he had to retake it b/c it was required to graduate. He was able to get accepted to the D1 without graduating b/c he was NCAA elgilble out of HS. He had a 2.0 or better GPA and a 21 ACT. So it all depends on if you need these credits to graduate or if you have to graduate to be elgilble . If you don't need the credits to grad. or be elgilble you can retake them if they are required for your major at the 4 yr. Hope this helps.

I do know each school handles their tranfers differently but the school you are wishing to transfer to should have some info on their site. plus if your transferring as an player they have an athletic academic advisor that will help with all this.

What we did was apply and his NLI was signed after he was accepted...

Good Luck

In order to transfer to a D1 school you must graduate from the juco. If you were a "qualifier" out of high school it is my understanding that as long as you graduate you will be fine. If you want to go to a DII school, you don't have to graduate, but must have at least 24 hours of transderable credits. Again, as long as you were a "qualifier" out of high school. If you go the ncaa.org site, you can download their "Transfer 101" booklet. It was very helpful to me and explains things fairly clear.
DI and DII have the same rules as far as qualifier out of HS, if my memory is correct. B/C Matt had a teammate at the juco that didn't qualify out of HS and he had to graduate to go DII but he had plenty of credits but he had to graduate to go there. Maybe I'm wrong but that was his case.

lafmom it was Rob before he went to KWC.
03 - You're correct that the player had to be a DII qualifier out of HS to be able to move on to DII early or he must graduate from JUCO. Some kids may have been a DII qualifier out of HS and not a DI qualifier, thus they could leave early for DII, but would have to stay at JUCO to graduate for DI options.

Rob is such a sweetie that I think they should have made an exception in his instance! Big Grin

The answer is "yes".

If you did not qualify out of high school, then you must have the Associate degree.

If you did qualify, then you don't need the Associate degree, but you must have a certain amount of transferrable credits. I believe the amount is 40% of total credits required for a Bachelor degree in the major you will be entering at the new school (assuming you went to the JUCO for 2 years). Typically, Lib Arts credits will count, but many trade/tech credits or "fluff" credits won't.

But remember, this is just clearinghouse stuff. Each school will have their own transfer admissions policy. That's where your GPA will come in.

Totally Confused,
If you qualified D1 out of high school and you have gone for two years, you need to have 48 credit hours accepted by the D1 school, and 40% must be applied to a particular major.

The trap most kids fall into, they will take their classes without much thought and will have too many social sciences, humanities, maths, and even though they have 48 credit hours, they can not be accepted because of improper distribution of classes.

Example: As you know you must declare your major when you go to a D1 school. This is when the counting starts. For instance, if you take too many classes that are considered humanities, then the extras become identified as electives by the D1 school. Let's say the major you declare allows 9 credit hours of electives and after you total all your credit classes that transfer and you have 12 electives, you lose 3 credit hours right there.

In extreme cases, some kids will take weightlifting, baseball, photography, college appreciation....classes that help them stay eligible to play ball but do not help when they try and transfer.

The difference between DI and DII, DII requires the 48 credit hours, but does not require the 40% transferring into a particular major.

If you did not qualify coming out of high school you must get your AA, but bare in mind, even then some DI's may require to retake classes.

It is also worth noting classes beginning with an "0" count as credits permitting you to play, but does not transfer. Example MAT 093 is a remedial math class you may have had to take. It counts as 3 credits towards the 12 credits to play, but will not transfer to a DI or DII.

It sounds complicated, but it really is not. You just need to be aware of the classes you are taking. I love JUCO and think most kids should consider it, but I always recommend kids take summer classes for the remedial classes before they go and continue summer classes in between each year.

That is about the best I can do without looking specifically at your transcript. If you want to discuss it further you can give me a call and I will do my best to help.
