Took my 2007 Saturn Vue to the shop today to get tuneup, ... and ready for our last summer tournament. 79,000 exactly on the car and so, about time to start looking for another car. It always takes us a full year to get a car so I'll be looking to buy next year at this time.

My Vue has great room despite the size. We took a player along this past week with my daughter to a tournament. So we had luggage for 4 adults, a large cooler on wheels, a tent for shade, two equipment bags and 4 bats, a small water cooler and a small cooler. All of that went into the back so that the girls could sleep. I had a small but decent portal to look out the back through my rearview mirror. I love my Vue. However Saturn is no longer around. I'll look at the Ford Edge for sure.

What do you drive and how much space do you have. Oh, it has to be an SUV due to tournament play.

OK, my oil burning and lovingly kissed ol' Chrysler LHS® 4 door sedan is an SUV for the sake of this conservation. And by kissed I mean dented. Ask both of my daughters. They were a tag team that night.

I love my LHS®. I can park it anywhere unlocked. The door locks, when activated, always set off the alarm when trying to open it so I never lock it anymore. No one bothers with this car. And roomy? A trunk to die for! A feature our scattered mafia types really miss with all of the newer models!

Me......my LHS®

LOL. I just bought a truck with a little over 20k more miles on it Wink

I was looking at a Jeep Patriot, but ended up getting a pretty good deal on my truck.

2002 Silverado with 99,500 miles on it. Paid way under Kelly Blue Book for it. You know the owner; he beat it up but he's a great guy Wink

If I'd have known that, I'd made you a deal. LOL! By next year at this time, I will have added substantial miles. I will have gone to all of BB's games in college and then her summer schedule again.

TPM, I don't plan on making payments. Then again you never know what will happen between now and then. We still have some farm equipment to sell and so, that should cover some of the cost. Have a great Kobota Tractor if you're interested. LOL!
Love my Suburban! Over 215,000 miles - holds everybody & everything! As an added bonus, no one can touch each other Wink

I drive between 700 & 1000 miles a week (yes, really!) and am comfortable, safe & happy through all of them. We've done almost no work to it ($65 on ac repair this year) and we are very good about regular maintenance. It's leather interior and even with cleats & dance bags there are no tears or holes.

Great car...

I appreciate the advice. I know that is what they say but I never know when I am going to be out of a job. crazy
Just bought a Ford F-150 Crew Cab Texas Edition with a "Tano" cover. Everything fits in the bed, covered, and My 6'1" lefty sophomore to be had plenty of room to stretch out next to his upcoming 7th grade sister. We even hauled some of the other players stuff on our way to the 15u PG BCS Finals in Ft. Myers. Past tourneys, we drove a Volvo wagon and a Ford Escape. Both with the Sears luggage carrier on top. Cool
Still drive a Honda element. Great car, great mileage very low maintenance. Seats fold up and can haul all kinds of ****. No worry about dirt, mud cleats, it kas an all plastic interior designed for the outdoor type. Also have a Thule pod for the roof to carry all the baseball gear on overnight ears. Has 239,000 miles and still running strong.

If you're in the market for a small SUV, I'd look hard at the Honda CRV. We've had ours for 3 years, and it is a great car. This was our 5th Honda since we got married...23 years ago. We buy new and drive them into the ground. My oldest drives a 95 Accord with 105Kmiles at college, and my middle son gets to drive a 2003 Honda Odessey with 160K miles to school (30 miles everyday). Teenage boys love to drive minivans! We recently had to "put down" a 1999 Accord with 210K miles with a new stickshift. I loved that car. No, I don't work for Honda.

Much to our children's chagrin I drive a 2003 Toyota Sienna minivan. They have been after us to get rid of the van for years! With only the two of us it probably is time to send it to minivan heaven but we hate to finance cars. FWIW our two kids have had 5 cars between them in the 10 years we have had the Toyota. We have travelled all over the eastern US watching son play ball, hauled teammates and gear to games, camps and now we haul grandparents to games! It has nearly 200,000 miles on it and never misses a beat. We were finally about to look for a new car but son decided he just had to have a new pickup so mom will wait a while for her new wheels!
Sultan, perhaps your experience is why the mechanic yesterday recommended that we get rid of the Saturn Vue AWD before we get to 100,000 miles. It make sense now but,to be honest, we get tremendous gas mileage and have had no problems. Our Saturn was estimated to get 24 mph when we bought it and we easily get 26-27. We have figured it out several times because we can't believe that we get that kind of gas mileage.

Fenway, LOVE THE SHIFTER!

We would get a mid-size SUV since I am a pack rat.

Thanks everyone for the responses. This has turned into a fun thead to read!

It's not better to pay interest higher than you can make investing the money on your own. If losing value over the curb is an issue buy a clean car coming off a three year lease.
Dropped off my 2012 (now 2016?) at the college of his choice earlier this summer. He was the baby. I really need to get rid of the 2001 Honda Odessy - but somehow - after all the baseball trips - all the recruiting trips - all the sweaty socks and bat bags - all the guest players carried to tournaments - all the air conditioned rest breaks at the fields between games - I cannot bring myself to let it go. I do dream of tooling around in a Crossfire - but for now I'd rather have the memories...
I drove sports cars (Mustang, Z, Porsche, RX7) before kids. I've driven Cherokees since the second/youngest was born. By putting 75K miles on the current one over two years it now has 175K. Since it's in mint condition once my youngest went off to college last fall I'm in drive it until it doesn't look good or drive well mode. Then it's either a new Cherokee or back to sports cars.

I've always bought new except the Porsche. I knew the previous owner. I don't like to inherit other people's problems. But in the past ten years dealerships specializing in clean three year old cars coming off leases have popped up. I'll at least consider it. It saves the over the curb devaluation of a new car. I saw a used Porsche for sale the other day and started drooling.
We love our 2010 Ford Flex - the styling is either "love it" or "hate it" (I love it, wife is finally warming up to it), but very practical - we've taken it on several trips including to Tennessee (2011) and Georgia last week. Lots of room for driver and passengers, good mileage (21 MPG with the air on "Max AC" through the hills of KY, TN and GA). 6'1" 2014 is comfortable in the second row of seats. Would recommend over the Ford Edge.

My middle son gets credit for the "shifter design". He received a game ball, and thought he'd put it to use rather than putting it on his shelf.

I hear ya loud and clear. I don't think I can get rid of mine either. It gets decent gas mileage, and drives like my Accord. Our Odessey van is the "baseball" van for sure. Three trips to Disney world for AAU Nationals, 2 trips to Cooperstown, 4 trips to East Cobb, countless trips to mid-Atlantic tournaments, and a bunch of college recruiting trips. It is a workhorse, and the engine is solid. It is in the shop right now as my middle son had a little fender bender last week ($2500 damage and everybody is ok). He kept all his Legion & practice uniforms, workout clothes, gloves, bats, turf shoes, cleats, ball buckets, and cases of drinks in the van. It is a locker room on wheels, but what a great car. Oh, I forgot....our 75lb yellow labrador rides in the car on all family trips. I may need to hang a dozen (or two) evergreen air freshners in the van when it gets back from the shop. Smile

We have a 2004 Toyota Sienna minivan with over 120,000 miles on it. No major problems except that it likes to eat tires. Seems like a get new tires almost every year because the thing keeps falling out of alignment. It's great for hauling all sorts of things around and my son never asks to borrow it (except for the weekend road trip to see his new girl friend - not "girlfriend" yet).

I guess we'll find out next month how good it is for moving into college. Looks like we're keeping it for a few more years because we have decided that the next vehicle will not be a minivan (or a station wagon or a SUV).

Maybe I'll finally get my BMW 6 series convertible?
great thread.

let's see, BKIC, that's Before Kids In College, I enjoyed driving "Pre-Owned Certified' (i.e. used!). Two Mercedes and a BMW, all at different times. Great Rides. Then the kids grew up and what's left in my driveway is an '05 Odyssey and a '98 Mazda. Nuff Said!

Gotta say we are emotionally attached to the Odyssey though, given its role in carting the kids around to all their trials and tribulations! 123,000 miles on it and still going strong.

At least I only have one kid to put through college, so maybe I'll just have to notch the dream down a little bit to a 3 series car. Wink
I have a 2003 Ford Expedition with 149,000 miles on it. It's been paid off since 08 and I really don't want anymore car payments. So far so good. No real problems to speak of.Plenty of room to carry the 3 of us and baseball gear. Most of our trips are up and down the coast here in SoCal, with the occasional trip back to PHX to visit the parents.

Gonna make another baseball roadie this weekend as we head up to West Covina for The San Gabriel Arsenal SoCal Cup.Looking forward to this Smile
