How important do you think travel is in summer select baseball? Been slow on here so it might spark an actual civil conversation.

My son over the last couple of summers has traveled extensively. We've seen the beautiful campus at OU, the "interesting" town of Stillwater, played at a brand new minor league ballpark in Kansas City, went to Steamboat Springs and Grand Junction Colorado.

Was it worth it? Some I can honestly say yes, others, well, no. With the competition here in the metroplex, the boys traveled to face teams that they could have faced here.

Would I go back and change any of the schedules....no. The boys, and that's what really matters I think, enjoyed every trip. My son has memories that will last a lifetime. He, in fact was retelling stories of that Kansas City trip again last night. (guess he enjoyed that trip the most because I stayed home and he got to room with Lynn, Big Grin )

Can't say how many times we traveled out of state to play other Texas teams in semis and finals. "We flew all the way out here to play you guys again?" was a pretty common comment.

But the travel was fun for son and teammates. Not so fun for the hotel staff. Lots of good memories.

When he was nine we played the Dallas Texans in the USSSA championship up in Joplin. By the time we got to that game we had played many times during the year and the boys all new each other.
After the game they traded hats. My son wore a Texan hat for like a year. Pretty weird to see that hat on his head. But pretty cool too.

KellerDad - congrats on bein a new Grandad.

Keller Dad we traveled an awful lot when our players were 14U. As a matter of fact, we did not play league play and was just a tournament team. However I find the older the kids get the less inclined you are to travel because most are coming off long high school seasons and you do not want to wear them out over the next 60 days. Also, some are working to secure that car for college. In my opinion 3 times during the summer not including trips to say AABC Mickey Mantle or Connie Mack sites is more than adequate.
travel does not make a kid better. i think
a lot of select programs use travel as a sales
pitch to their kids. there are plenty of pro
and college scouts in the DFW area.
travel eliminates some kids who don't have the money to keep up with the parents who will pay
anything to see their kid play ball.
two or three travel dates may be OK, but as some
have mentioned as many as 5.
just my thoughts..........i've been through it.
i can remember one time traveling from dallas to
kansas city which is a long way only to play a tournament on fields that were terrible.
