Batters protective gear that allows them to stand on top of the plate without fear of getting hit. I get it if you are protecting an injury, otherwise shouldn't be allowed.

I respectfully request that we now refer to the round hair thing on the top of a players scalp as "Man Hair Buns" I just couldn't stop laughing at the idea people were so closely scrutinizing and hating Man buns...not that there is anything wrong with that...

Really I meant talent level more than age, but even at 14 I don't get it. I just don't understand the reasoning behind them, other than to say you are in a wood bat tournament. I hear parents talk like because it's a "wood bat tournament" it must be filled with talent. At least around these parts.
Guys closing in on the draft need to be seen with wood, other than that I don't understand. They are almost always very boring 1-0 games.Baseball is hard enough with metal bats.

Ah, in these parts I haven't been hearing that there MUST be talent due to them being in a wooden bat tournament....I have mostly heard "Now we will see who can truly hit out of the infield and who just has a great metal bat."

I do think one of the great ironies of our time is that all the big regional and national events that are heavily scouted and recruited by colleges are wood bat...but they don't play with wood bats in college!
i have heard all the arguments about coaches wanting to see who can hit with wood...I realize I am in the minority but I was a college coach I would want to see potential players hit VS the same type of pitching they will see with me with the same type of equipment they will use with me!! LOL I realize how logical that sounds and how much smarter people then me disagree so I will just continue to enjoy it on my own.
I assume this is left over thinking from the days when the bats were loaded and kids could hit 40 or 50 HR in a season...old logic dies hard sometimes. In todays world of BBcor the old arguments about being able to tell if a kid can hit don't hold up to sound logic IMO.
The funny thing is I am not against wood, my younger son swears by it and uses it all the time, older one honestly doesn't care what the event is just so he knows a week ahead of time to do BP with the right stick the week before.
It's all OK by me.
But if it is bothersome, just remember: "this too shall pass."
If you watch the Wally Backman clips at work or near kids / important people then better make sure you have headphones in. He goes 0 - 100 MPH quickly on that ump...but it's hilarious.

Son (and several other players) did this not too long ago. I thought, how odd.
Then I realized that they arrived early for BP and practice before the game when it was daylight. They played a game earlier in the day, so it was daylight then. But as dark approached, quite possibly the sun glass case was not in his bat bag and the glasses were safer on his hat. 
With the recent ads/discussions about bat shaving, it made me think maybe wood bats are not such a bad idea.
The only trend I really hate is losing.
Pedro Sandoval in the lineup is an irritating trend.

I really dislike people who throw at others for any reason.
My 2018 is a pitcher. He steadfastly refuses any coach who suggests that he pitch to hit another player, although he hits people by accident on rare occasions. He has never worn protective gear when batting, but he recently got hit for the fifth time in our young season (Iowa, summer HS baseball) — the most in our conference.
He asked for an elbow guard and I'm inclined to give it to him--(or as a mom, wrap him in bubble wrap). One kid hit son in his shoulder and head in one game — can't believe that was by mistake. Fortunately, he didn't throw very hard.

Assuming your son is a '19 that means he is playing 16u ball this year right? I think my '17 grad played wood for all but 2 weekends or maybe 3 his 16u year and I am not sure he played anything but wood in his u17 year.

Yes. Actually his travel program is wood only, so when he's playing travel, it's wood, and when he's playing with his high school, it's not.
