I was wondering how you guys ran tryouts? How do you set it up and what things do you look for? Do you have an intrasquad game to see how kids react? How many days do you go before first cuts? What grading system do you use to evaluate the kids?

Basically I am just looking for how you handle try outs overall?

And then, how do you do cuts? Do you post a list of who made it and offer kids a chance to come talk to you if they want? Do you bring each kid in one at a time? What do you do?

Thank you,

Put all the kids at SS and hit them ground balls and have them throw to first. Just look at how they approach the ball and field it athrow it. You will learn a lot as to who cant't play. Way back when I cut those players on the first day(sounds mean but you just do what u have to do) today i am sure you would not be able to cut them on the first day but that initial hitting of ground balls will give you a good idea and go from there.
I divide my kids into 3 groups: 1. infielders, 2. outfielders, 3. infielders or outfielders (depending on what I have the most of)
Coaches cover one of three stations.

Throwing (outside) -Long toss and from RF or SS depending

Fielding (in or out) - Fungo fielding and fielding drill reaction

Hitting (cage)- pitching machine throwing strikes. Evaluated on hard hit, swing and miss, and form.

Each station is 20 minutes and the coach stays at that station to evaluate each player on a 1-5 score. After that time pitchers and catchers work out. Coaches will rotate to a new station each day for 3 days. After 3 days we compare scores and discuss the borderlines and assess if more looks are needed for particular kids. We make initial cuts after that and then have intersquads for the next 2 days after which we make final decisions.
