EXACTLY!!! But, as head coach, it is my responsiblity to keep them grounded. I feel that I have failed at that. Here is how our 2nd inning went as we allowed 8 unearned runs...

1b
F7
1b, runners on 1st and 2nd
IF Error, routine ground ball, have to get an out at one of two bases on this ball. Should be 2 outs, instead there is 1 out and bases loaded.
F7, no runners advance. Should be the 3rd out, but is only the 2nd
3b, all three runs score
BB, runner scores on wild pitch
1b,
IF Error,
1b,
1b,
1b,
L6

8 unearned runs!!!

Funnel,

I hate to say it, but I can top your 8 unearned in one inning. We gave up 15 runs and a grand total of 3 were earned. We had two innings where we gave up 6 unearned runs. Granted 5 of our 11 runs were also unearned, but man what a night! It is really hard to beat anybody when you make 8 errors!
Ok, this may spur a new discussion but...

In my opinion, defenses are weaker than other areas of today's HS teams -- the fields are nicer, the hops should be truer, etc. When is the last time you invested a private instruction dollar on defense? I, for one, hope the "academies" and select teams focus more energy on defense in the near future. I don't "blame" the HS coaches -- there are so many things to work on and a limited amount of practice time. I think defense is an under-rated part of the game. At this time of the year, we shouldn't have so many horror stories about innings full of unearned runs ---- but we do.

PD one thing I've learned from this you can have two scouts sitting in the stands and get two totally different readings with the same brand of guns. For instance I saw a Walden pitch ranch from 95 - 101, and Britton from 91 - 94. I would guess there where between twenty five and thirty scouts there. I'm just glad Mr. Walden chose to go to America Quest on Monday and meet Mr. Clements rather than go to practice with his team. He is the real deal. WOW
Safe to say that 101 was probably a big fly that got in the way of the gun <g>. I always get a kick out of people who see a gun give that misread of 112 and run off to tell their friends how fast the pitcher's throwing.

Britton was 90-91, Walden 92-94. Saw Walden pitch at 95. His velocity was better than a couple of starts ago, but not quite where it was at the start of the season.

I tend to agree with you, but read the PRs from colleges, MLB game coverage in papers, and the local HS stories in community papers. Offensive achievements are publicized, even when the great defensive play saved the game. I can only remember one time when a defensive play was mentioned in newspaper story during son's HS playing days, and that was when the pitcher was quoted.
