They've also had good success at the D1 level prior to that off year. Personally, my impression of the coaches, especially their honesty with the potential recruits, is very positive. Their balance between academics and athletics is more inline with an Ivy League type school than most west coast D1s so they aren't likely to make the NCAAs year in and year out. JMO.
BOF,

I'm an Alum of UCD (Football) as is my wife. We still live very close to campus and have many, many friends that work there.

The program has recently made the jump to D-1 and plays in the very tough Big West Conference. 2008 they did make the NCAA regionals and gave Stanford all they could handle. Many players were drafted and signed from tht team causing a bump in the road for 2009. Lots of Freshmen and RS Freshman saw the mound last year. "Reloading" might not happen as quickly at UCD as it does at other Big West programs. Coach Peters has done a good job building the program and I would encourage my sons to play there. This year will show how much of a rebound UCD can muster coming off a rebuilding year.

The academics are rated very high nationally and the campus is beautiful. Small college town atmosphere. If you like that kind of thing.

I encourage you to check it out. (No I am not a paid recruiter for the school.) Ha
Thanks guys we will definitely make a trip to the school at some point. My son (2011) sent out follow up emails from the Arizona Fall Classic to a number of schools; some did not respond, some came back with generic “come to our camp” emails and a few came back with individual responses, UC Davis being one of them - specifically saying they saw him play and he is high on their 2011 list. I was impressed with the individual tone of the email, not just a cut and paste with his name plugged in. He is looking at high academic D1 schools so they fit his profile. I like the concept of a small college town away from a large metropolitan area so it sounds interesting. We are very familiar with all of the Big West schools and a handful of the other high academic programs are also on his list, however I was concerned about their ability to compete and did not really know much about the school. He has a former teammate going there (not playing baseball) so we have some other resources to get some more information.

Thanks again this helps!
BOF, I am very familiar with the program and coaches and would be happy to talk to you privately. Your son was most likely seen in Arizona by Coach Schifano, who is UCD's recruiting coordinator. He's a great guy, a very good baseball ooach as well. I can tell you most of what you want to know about the program, as I talk with them fairly regularly, and a couple of my former players have gone on to play for the Aggies. I do have a very high regard, overall, for what they're doing.

As Patriot said, there were more than a few reasons they floundered last year after making it to the Stanford regional the year before. They were one win away from going to the Super Regional in 2008. What they lost from the 2008 team was 5 players to the MLB draft, and then they had a couple pitchers go down with arm injuries, so they were very thin on pitching last year. They're a good program that more players would do well to consider.

UCD is a fantastic academic university, it takes about a 3.5 just to be eligible for consideration. They are strong in science, medicine and especially - veterninary medicine. If you'd care to know more, send me a PM and I'll share more.

BOF did Jr. go to their camp? We are considering it.
per Coach's email also saw Jr (2012) in the 2010 Fall Classics.
Ryanrod,

We did go to the camp and visit the school. My son liked the coaches and also the school. Very good academic school and nice college oriented town. I would make sure that your son talks to Coach Shifano (recruiting coach) first and find out what positions they are recruiting for and see where your son fits in their recruiting requirements. When my son went to the camp they had a ton of infielders, and were only recruiting for one, while there were fewer outfielders present and they were recruiting for 2-3. They had already filled their catcher position and were looking for a walk on. They have a very big yard so speed is important to them, not a lot of homeruns hit there. (probably even fewer with the new bats) PM me if you want as my son had lots of communication with them. He is still on their follow list, but he will probably commit somewhere else before they get around to seeing him this season. They are looking for two more pitchers this year, not sure about 2012. BTW if you are planning on going that far to visit I would make sure you get over to the bay area and at least visit USF, Stanford, Menlo and Santa Clara. (Cal also if they end up saving the program) These will give you a good idea of the NorCal higher academic schools.

You probably will love it too if you are a gap-gap, line drive hitter! Smile

BOF..Thanks for info. Will consider it. Stanford Campus was great. Didn't have the chance to see any other schools when we were at the Futures camp last time although we are aware of the other schools. I will PM you later during my time off.
