UIL Rule ?

Good question. I am guessing here....but I think he is eligible to play varsity but not necessarily in the same district. I seem to recall that districts can have their own unique transfer rules. Some may require coach/AD/principal approval to transfer. I'm sure others are more knowledgable in this area.

I don't think it matters whether the athlete has played "varsity" but rather what was the intent of the transfer. JMHO

The rule states if the player has played in the previous year at the previous school while in grades 9-12.

The former school's coach and administrator must sign off on ALL transfers. If they don't then things get kind of muddy. If they don't then they are saying that he is moving/transferring for "athletic purposes." If that is the case then he sits for 1 calendar year.

That is the thing most people do not understand. The family can physically move, it really is legit...they sell their house and buy a new one. But, if it is found that they did it for "athletic purposes," the new UiL district that he is moving to can rule not to grant him varsity eligiblity. I have seen it happen!

Now in our SCHOOL District, if you go to another school after your Freshman year you are sitting for 1 year...period.

Let's say you moved from, oh I don't know, Flower Mound to Coppell. Even though you are moving SCHOOL districts, FMHS has to "sign off" on the Previous Athletic Participation form. Even if they do, the 6-5A executive commmittee could vote to make the kid sit 1 calendar year.

I know this may not seem fair to some that may be in an undesireable situation at their current school. But think how out of control things would be if you could just transfer wherever you want with no reprecussions!!!

alright,say a kid leave's a different country, comes back to Texas for his senior year, enrolls after christmas, what possible reason could UIL have for not allowing him to play baseball?

I think what funnel is telling you is that it is truly out of the UIL's hands. The districts make those decisions, following UIL guidelines. If a student left the country and came back for his senior year then he should still need a PAPF from his last "legal" school district. FD, correct me if I am wrong on this.

I believe the rules are a little different for seniors since they are required to be on the varsity team.

Seniors are not required to be on a varsity team.

I don't know the young man or all the details,his petition was denied, even though he and parents lived out of the country.I heard from my son that it didn't help him not living with his parents.?

If you do not live with your parents...then your parents have to turn over "educational guardianship" over to whom ever the kid is living with. Then, you have to have a "residential affidavit" on file with the school you are attending. Then you can expect a couple of "home visits" by the principal and/or assistant principals to make sure that you "actually" live there. If the kid is not there, if their clothes are not there, then the school will withdraw you!

If those two documents are not on file at the new school, you are ineligible.

Remember, the District Executive Committee votes on every PAP Form that comes before them.

I am waiting to hear about a couple of transfers that I have. I don't forsee any problems, but you never know.

My wife is a principal of a 5A High School in this area. I get to hear lots of stories from her DEC meetings!!!

Oh, and as for Seniors...it does not matter.

Just ask South Lake Carroll...they'll tell you.

We will have some seniors on our JV this year as well. Mainly pitching help so some of our young guys do not get abused.

Dont mean to drag this on, but I had one additional question related to this topic.....

Scenario:

Middle school coach is going to coach a summer 17/18 year old team. The middle school coach's attendance zone is split between 2 high schools. Potential player lives in a different middle school zone that also goes to one of these 2 high schools. Can that player play for the coach?

Actually meant to put this question on the other UIL post that was going.....beginner.

Can a player play in JV and a Varsity tournament in the same weekend?

Sure, players are limited to a certain amount of tourn. + games for the season.

This would probably warrant a call to the UIL, but I would assume the answer would be that he could not coach the team while his zone includes both high schools it would seem to be a violation is a player from either of those HS were on his team.

Well, I guess my son is stuck, and that is very unfortunate for him. If you have a son entering high school, the best thing that you can do is go to some games and talk to parents in the stands. I wish we would have done that. It's amazing what you will find out when you talk to other parents.

I funneldrill responded to this & can longer post on this website. But, have a question that maybe someone else can answer. When you say a player that transfers has to sit for 1 year, do you mean sit and not play at all, or have to play on jv for 1 year?

He/she can play on sub-varsity teams.

Thanks for the correction. I have been told incorrectly many times. Excellent example of why a call to UIL is the best best.
