If anyone could help me with UIL rules I would appreciate it. Last year my son as a freshman played both Varsity and JV. Sometimes even on the same night he would play on both teams. The way I understood the rule is a player had a certain number of games he can participate in a year at any level. If he was to use that number up by playing JV and Varsity games he could become inelegible by the end of the year or for the playoffs. Is this the case? If so, what is the maximum number of games allowed and are scrimmages and tournements counted toward this number? Thanks!

Contest During the School Week
According to State Board of Education mandates, students may only participate on one day per activity during the
school week. Exception: District varsity contests postponed due to weather or public disaster may also be scheduled
during the school week, but must be rescheduled and played on the next date following the postponement in order to
be played as an exception. Post-season competition may also be scheduled as an exception to the one contest during
the school week. School week means the week beginning at 12:01 am on the first instructional day of a calendar week and ends at the close of instruction on the last instructional day of the calendar week, excluding holidays. Post-District
play means competition in UIL play-off series or contests such as Bi-District, Area, Regional, etc.

School "instruction ends at 2:30-3:00pm, depending on your District. Games are scheduled after instruction ends. Players are allowed to play either JV or Var. on Tues night, then come back on Fri & play both JV & Varsity games.

There is no rule concerning "the number of games" a player can play during a season.

My son did this 2-3 times his Freshman year, until he was moved to Varsity.
Most programs keep a spread sheet to make sure each player is not over the limit. P-Dad is correct, also if a JV player is in a JV tournament and then "called up" to play with the varsity in the same weekend, he has now been in two of his three allowed tournaments. Yes, I will agree some abuse the system but it's also a way to judge your coach and his character.
you guys are right a player can only play in 17 games and 3 tournaments,19 games and 2 tournaments, or 21 games and 1 tournament..

if you are going to move them from one team to the next you have to keep track of the # of games that each kid has played in.

Further,

he can only play in one game per school week..ex. monday and friday, or tuesday and friday. He cannott play in a jv game on monday and a varsity game on tuesday.

we do this quite often with guys that can run bases or relief pitchers..

scrimmages do not count against their games..
Ok -- I reread the rule. A Friday night game is not considered to occur during the school week. So, a kid could pitch a JV on Tuesday, pinch run at V on Friday, and play a position for JV on Saturday (for a non-district game)...counting as 3 of his 17 games. The week begins at 12:01am on Monday (for normal weeks) and ends at end-of-instruction on Friday. One needs a masters to understand all this..... Smile
