I grew up in New Hampshire:

If spring weather was that good, we'd call off practice and go to the beach...

Seriously, I remember the team manager's first job in HS was to take a highlighter and color 4 or 5 balls yellow or orange so we could find them during the first few practices in the snow.

Another seriously, this image captures the rationale for leaving Troy, New York (RPI) for Arizona a few days after graduation.
We've had three scrimmages here in upstate SC...and two of the three have been played in sub-freezing temps...hard to get a lot of productive anything done in that weather. At least the local sporting goods store has sold out of their cold gear and face masks...BTW, we won all three (24-0, 9-4, and then against last year's AAA state champion 7-6....I know, it's just a scrimmage, but certainly helps with the confidence factor going into the season.)
I DO live in New Hampshire and up until yersterday our fields were for the most part uncovered. We got 6-8 inches of snow yesterday to change that but usually we'd have at least as much snow as in that picture right now. You'd be amazed at how quick that will melt with temps in the mid 40's or better and a rain storm or two. Now you know why tryouts don't even start until March 22nd up here!
That's James River 2008 grad Jack Cleary behind the plate. I'm told the photo is a bit old. The baseball team actually ended up clearing things on this field and on other spring sports teams' fields as a way to raise funds for the baseball program.

Lemons into lemonade.

I do wonder how those guys in the background are managing to shag balls. Are they in snowshoes? And I swear it looks like one of them is wearing shorts!
What an unbelievable photo! My son, who was raised in north Alabama with frequent visits to family in south Florida, was amazed. Here, if we get a dusting of snow (which we'ved had more than enough of lately!) we panic. The realization of how the snow up north will be effecting baseball really hit us, as jr. will be attending USNA in Annapolis next year to play baseball. Here's hoping global warming wakes up and kicks back in! Wink
