I know that there is such a thing as umpire interference. i just dont know exactly what it is. our rec league is begining soon, and someone brought up the notion that we should call ump interference because of all the inexperienced players (mainly catchers that cant stop a ball) that happen to find the umpire as a physical obstacle. so my question, what is umpire interference exactly, and should we really be calling it in a middle/elementary school rec league?
The butt... it talks...

There are only two instances when Umpire Interference can be called;
1. when hit by a batted ball, before it passes an infielder.

2. with the throw by the catcher, actually bumping the catcher or most commonly the throwing arm as he/she is throwing.

Any other time just like a big bump in the field to ricochets balls and occasionally bodies off of.
Just to be clear, you do not call Umpire Interference....only the umpire can call interference and only under the 2 circumstances that JJK has already offered.

If I read you correctly you are wanting to call interference when your catchers miss the ball and then have to go around an Umpire to retrieve the ball......Correct??.....

If so, the umpire in that situation is just a part of the field that you need to teach your catchers to avoid....

A good umpire should be clearing the catcher when there is a passed ball or wild pitch, but we can not disappear from the play or area.....and we can not reward a bad play by the defense (pitcher or catcher) by calling interference on thier mistake.....

Hope this helps..
