Batter is digging in getting ready to hit in a sandy batter's box. Umpire calls time and tells hitter he knows he marking out the box lines but he knows where they are. Then tells hitter if he hits the ball he is out. Batter hits ball and is immediately called out. Next at bat ump tells batter to back up twice, forcing him to get completely in the rear of the box. Any thoughts? Coach would not address this with ump.

1. If the batter is not in the box, we ain't playing. If the foot is touching but inside, that's fine.

2. If the batter won't enter the box, strike without a pitch, repeat...

3. It seems this umpire was a bit overzelous or untrained. Was he assuming the closeness of the Batters foot to the line would take him out of the box should he contact a ball? Bad assumption IMO.

4. If the foot or feet are completely outside the lines and on the ground upon contact, out.

5. To direct a batter where in the box to stand is way out of line IMO.

I just can't picture what the batter was doing to gain such a response from the umpire. So will lay blame on poor umpiring without further information.
It sounds like it could be a couple of things. Most likely either an OOO or an untrained umpire. The other possiblity is there is more to what led up to the conversation. Either way the PU shouldn't be instructing the batter where to stand unless he is truly out of the box before the pitch.
If a batter wants to stand all the way forward but is inthe box legally then I'm never going to say a word. Some guys just weight shift so they can get away with being that far forward. If they stride then they most likely will be out of the box on the swing but I'm still not going to coach him on how to avoid it.
