If you attend a division 3 school for one year (freshman year) without playing baseball and then transfer to another school after freshman year to play baseball... would you lose a year of NCAA eligibility?

Not an expert here but I believe the NCAA clock starts ticking when you enroll in any college. . You have 5 years to complate 4 years of participation.
There is nothing simple about transfers. That is why the NCAA authored a 36-page document that goes into a lot of detail about various transfer situations.
My two cents....read the document for your specific unique situation and then call the NCAA to verify what you know and answer any questions.

I know a kid who went to a D2 didn't play, missed the game, transferred to a D3 and had 4 yrs of eligibility left. I am pretty sure you are fine, actually if you don't play at all I don't believe the clock ever starts...but not 100% on that one.
I think it's safe to say that if you are transferring to another DIII, then no, you have not lost a year of eligibility. You did not use one of your four DIII "seasons of participation", if you didn't practice or compete during or after the first real game.
DIII eligibility is different than DI/DII. It's based on semesters, not calendar years. If I were transferring, I would definitely contact Rick Allen for advice.
