I was watching in utter amazement as the Tampa Spartans who were trailing the Florida Institute of Technology 10-1 as the 6th inning began and started a comeback, that over the next 3 innings resulted in a 14-11 win for Tampa, and I noticed something that never really occurred to me before.
When the score was 10-10 we were really focused on getting outs and the opposition was focused on advancing runners, when FIT put down a bunt to advance their runner and we made the obvious play to get the out, we cheered! And because the FIT runner was advanced to 2nd the FIT fans cheered also! Here we were, two opposing teams cheering the results of the same play. It happened again later when we had gotten the first out, and they had runners on 2nd and 3rd and we were leading 13-10. Their player hit the ball deep in the air and we made the out and they scored the run on a SAC.
What other sport do you find this happening where the fans of both teams cheer enthusiastically for the outcome of the same play?
Now, I am talking from a fans perspective, because in some situations the players are not excited about a SAC bunt advancing a runner, since they have the perspective that they screwed up letting the initial runner reach first to begin with.
But from a fans perspective, this is one of the great things about baseball which I think is unique to the game.
