If you want to play for a coach who leaves one ofhis starters in a game when his team is beating another team 38-0, then you should go to USC.

I'm ashamed to have the guy in the SEC.

Starzz...I just can't believe that a coach in the SEC would do something like that to another team.

In the second inning, when it is 21-0, you call off the dogs...but...no...he lets a kid bat 7 times in the game. Why?

In my opinion, too, I think they should consider firing the pitching coach from the other team for only drilling 2 hitters. I suppose he thought he was being "nice-nice".

First of all there is no pitching coach at CSU and second of all, CSU has beat USC a couple times recently as they open the season with each other every season.

The kid who started the game for CSU was the one that beat USC last year. Maybe Tanner was proving a little point and was bitter from last year. Or maybe the kid who hit 7 times in the game struggled all fall and spring and needed some a confidence booster. You never know what the situation was.

How correct you are!!! There is no reason to beat anyone 38-0 unless you are doing it with your bullpen taking the place of position players. That is crazy and if I were the AD of South Carolina, the head coach and I would have a little discussion @ 0400 hour Monday morning. That kind of **** makes the whole athletic department look bad.

South Carolina is the best program east of Austin, Texas. There has probably been words from CSU that warented a licking. That is the risk you take for going to Columbia or Gainsville or Athens or Clemson or Tallehassee or Miami or Atlanta if you a Big South team. You better know you can get them out.

I have had the awesome opportunity to meet Coach Tanner. He is such an awesome baseball guy, he knows so much. I believe the only reason that he let the game get that far out of hand is to give his players confidence for the upcoming season. I believe that there needs to be one game like that. It gets the juices going, and gets the team ready for the next game. Coach Tanner and staff are running a top of the line program over there at USC.
Anyways, LHS, USC has one of the top programs in the country. There are very few schools out there that match. Most polls have USC in the Top 10, not to mention they are projected to win the SEC. UNIVERSITY OF SOUTH CAROLINA=WINNING PROGRAM

This was not a typical lop sided game. It wasn't a 14-1 or 16-2 or even 19-0 game! It was twice that!!! Who has ever heard of a 38-0 score? There are no excuses for that kind of score! I don't care who the two opponents are or what time of year it is! This is not a baseball score!

Beenthere, what is Coach Tanner supposed to do? Is he going to tell his players, DONT HIT THE BALL GUYS. Its not like the CSU pitchers were throwing wild pitches and Tanner was sending them running all around the bases. Was CSU making errors? Were they walking people? There are many things that you should take into consideration. Coach Tanner cannot hold his players back from hitting the ball and producing runs.

I am probably the biggest SEC fan on this site. Everyone knows that I believe that the SEC and especially Mississippi State and LSU are two of the best baseball schools/programs in the country. That the MSU fans are #1 and LSU #2. Unfortunately, LSU has won more CWS/national championships than the rest of the SEC combined!

In my opinion, a bad decision was made.

Nothing more and nothing less.

You seem to think that I have some sort of personal vendetta out there in cyberspace. Not so.

I'm not saying they did not try to bury them, but there could be history there. Playing devils advocate, there could be explanations.

We went to Gainesville for UF vs. FSU on a Saturday. By the 5th inning it was 21 - 8 FSU. We left because the game was over. Driving out of town I turned on the radio broadcast of the game and it was 24-22 U of Fl leading in the eighth. They made up 16 runs in 3 innings. stuff like that is going to happen when you give weight lifting 20-22 year olds titanium bats. Not many games are out of reach in college, especially in a band box like Gainesville.

That said, the range of talent in division 1 college baseball varies widely. I watched a local HS stud, now freshman at UCF, go in for 2 innings at the end of a 17-4 blowout of UCF by LSU on Saturday. I think he gave up 3 bombs in 2 innings, in the rain.

His ERA is 13.5 today. It will come down. He might be pitching to VMI, or URI, or UVM or some other "hamburger" next week.

In looking at the box score it appears that the guy who hit 7 times started the game as the DH and was inserted at 3B as a substitute, probably to gain game experience. That explains it to me. Coach Tanner used 18 or so position players in the game and 5 pitchers. I don't think you can tell a kid who might only get 10-20 AB's all year not to mash.

Interestingly enough, the other 2 games in the series were 3-2 and 3-0, USC. Pretty competitive stuff here. As for the massacre, in the words of that UNC hoops sage James Worthy, sometimes it just bes that way.

Anyone that wants to correlate the Sat. score to Carolina having a "non-classy" coaching staff is sadly misinformed.

Carolina played essentially every spare fielder, including several true freshmen that may not get much P.T. the rest of the year.

Charleston Southern played USC close the other two games. The weather was horrible with rain all over on Saturday, which shifts the advantage way over to the more solid team.

UCF played extra inning games on Friday and Sunday with LSU......but got pounded 17-4 on Saturday.......in the rain.

I'm not going to comment on the game but the original poster asked about for opinions of South Carolina Baseball. Many big programs, including USC will carry 55 players during fall ball. They pride themselves on not having to give much money to prospects because they have so many players wanting to go there. Be very careful in making a decision to play at USC (if you are given very little money) because you may not be on the roster in the spring. I know one player who came back from the Christmas break to find that USC had signed a couple of additional players. USC told this player that he is now down on the depth chart and he should go somewhere else to play. He ended up at a reputable JC (maybe even with the help of USC) but I don't think most folks would appreciate being treated in this manner. I know there are never guarantees but this just doesn't sit well with me! BTW, the player is no relation to me.

It happens all the time, all over the country. I guess it goes with the territory of Top 20 programs and those trying to get there, (see Kentucky last fall). Hopefully, the coach helped those guys land on their feet.

Buckeye everyone won't do their homework the Gamecocks are not going to mislead any player the best will play the best will come the best will be sought the goal is Omaha how many players have committed to them and them turned pro??? no one talks of that side of the coin at least a player present can compete and in the state of South Carolina it is considered a privalige to be on the roster at USC or Clemson

I would have to agree. There are lines waiting to play at USC. Coach Tanner and staff do a great job recruiting, and do a great job winning. Ultimately, the goal at hand is to win the CWS. The talent is always coming their way, and it should. Someone commenting on USC as "Unclassy" is DEFINITELY misinformed. Anyways, the program at South Carolina is definitely one of the best.

No question about SC having one of the "best" programs in the country....if you are strictly going by won/loss records, and I'm sure that is what most of us judge a program by. We are giving advice to a poster who asked how they "stack up". They "stack up" very well! However, please don't use the w/l record as the only
criteria to judge a program by. The SC fans will certainly find no fault with their coach. The same goes for die hard Bulldog fans(both Ga and MISS St), Gator fans, Tiger fans etc. Before making a decision to go there, check with former players(if you can), teams that have played against them, other coaches, and unbiased opinions--there is more to it than won/loss record.

Suffice it to say that even though one poster says that the Coach
"is very well respected" I personally know two very knowledgeable
baseball people who would differ with that opinion.

I criticized the coach for letting a kid get 7 at bats in a game that they won 38-0. You would have thought that I stole a Confederate flag or something!

Everything quieted down when I asked the websters how they would feel if they were on the opposite side of the score....Then, I found that the SC football team lost to Clemson 63-17.

I asked how they thought the SC footballers felt as the Tigers were stepping on their helmets rushing into the SC endzone...You guessed it.

I don't believe in burying or drilling anyone under any circumstances....even if you, as the coach, feel that you "owe him one"...

Been, I have to admit that when I read the score that morning in the paper I thought it was a misprint. Until I saw your post.

I didn't come down on either side of this issue because I wasn't there to see it first hand, and I am a firm believer that teams only have themselves to blame when they get a "whuppin", But in my wildest imagination I can't see how the score could not have been "controlled" to a certain extent. Why couldn't some pitchers have been inserted in the lineup after 22-0? Most pitchers were probably good hitters for their HS teams.

Beenthere, facts don't seem to mean a whole lot to you, but the facts are.... you didn't get any response to your football analogy because (1) the thread closed, and (2) we weren't talking about football.

I asked you several questions in the previous thread, and you, of course, didn't answer any of them. I can certainly understand why you didn't.

Since it's obvious that you know pretty much nothing about Charleston Southern, and only slightly more than that about South Carolina, it would probably be best if you clambered down off of your soapbox. You're going to wind up embarrassing yourself more than you already have.

You guys keep tossing the term "hamburger" around---well I am here to tell you that that "hamburger" may just jump up and bite you next time around especially if you keep naming them.

I also agree. Coach Murphy at Charleston Southern has a difficult time dealing with an almost non-existent budget, but he usually finds a way to field pretty good teams. It may not show up in the won-lost column at the end of the season, but they manage to hang pretty well with the "big boys." They knocked off ACC member Maryland last weekend.

Give Coach Murphy the budget and facilities of lets see.... Miss. State, for example, and he'd move the Buccaneers from the "hamburger" category up to the rarified air of "prime rib".

Facts...That is what my original post was all about. SC 38-0 over ChasSouthern. I said that I would have called off the dogs and not let a kid bat 7 times in a game like that. Too, because of the rains, one of the other websters posted that it was like playing in mud...imagine if Landon Powell got hurt? He played into the 5th or 6th inning. Check the box score and see that virtually ALL of the starters batted 4-6 times in the game! Why bury somebody that way?

The analogy that I made to the football game was, in my opinion, very appropriate. SC pounded a team 38-0...in BASEBALL! Imagine how the kids at CS felt about the score?

In football, CLEMSON (apparently a bitter in-state rival) DRILLED SC 63-17. I said...Imagine how the SC football players felt as the Tigers kept on waltzing into the endzone?

Then again, maybe it was "payback" to Lou for some of the scores against Army and Navy when he was at ND. People have long memories in sport.

Make no mistake the rivalry is INTENSE! We are about to have an early season showdown between SC and Clemson this weekend!

SC is undefeated and has outscored their opponents 119-11. This year's Gamecocks are solid top-to-bottom with outstanding pitching and Clemson will come to town ranked as well. The kids really play their hearts out when they get together! The weekend series should be a lot of fun!
