He just left a job where it was far more likely he would get to Omaha on a regular basis to one where it is far less likely.

Gotta be some bucks ($$) involved here? Not what woulda motivated me...but then again, its not me and I learned long ago that unless I'm in the other guy's shoes, what I think I woulda done might be far different that what I actually woulda done.

The local newspaper said that Dave would receive $450,000.00 in base salary, his money from camps, bat contract, media deal & shoe contract which would increase it another $100,000.00+, and incentives based on team gpa, SEC Tournament, Regional Tournamet, Super Regional & College World Series. Who knows what the salary would be if he hit all of the incentives but I would not be shocked if it were around $650,000.00.

It is being reported that the Fall 2011 incoming class of freshmen @ The University of Tennessee has an average gpa of 3.85 and an ACT score of 28.5. This could make it somewhat difficult to recruit some of the top baseball talent.

Very true justbaseball..he got to the cws with a team Horton built and then went 2 and the q once he got there...Then the last game vs. Stanford... top of the 9th down by a run and you get the lead off on..he doesn't bunt him over lets the next batter swing way he pops up to 2nd base..then sends the base runner he gets picked off at 2nd..next batter rolls over to 2nd..game over..That is not Titan baseball imop the programe will be better off.

Why? Vanderbilt doesn't seem to have a problem with it.

Also check the averages of the incoming football players. UT doesn't have any where near the same standards for athletes they do for regular students. Well with the exception of women's basketball and softball theirs may be higher than that of normal students. Smile
His chances of getting to Omaha might be better because the conference has so many teams entered in the 64 field. Also, the regionals could prove to be easier in the long run, if he were to get a bid.

I know not much about him. He has to produce though, because UT gives coaches so many chances.

Either way, the conference probably just got a lot tougher.
No sour grapes in Fullerton, we are happy he is gone. Titan baseball is and always will be "getm on movem over drivem in" Do you know who he left on deck with the bat in his hands? Nick Ramirez with 9hr and 50 rbi's and Michael Lorensen in the hole if they wanted to pitch around him. we are happy for him, best of luck...but most of all we are happy for us Titans!

Yes, Vanderbilt does have high academic standards and it seems as if both schools require less of their athletes than they do of the other students at the University. I do know for a fact that the University of Tennessee is not as willing to make academic exceptions for their athletes as they were in the past. The football & basketball coaching staffs have ask the university to use the minimum standards established by the NCAA for their athletes and the topic is being debated. The problem is that the univeristy admissions office is only going to make so many exceptitions for athletes and we both know most of those will go to the football and basketball programs because they generate the most revenue. I am all for high academic standards but I was shocked when I read what the mean scores were for the 2011 freshmen class.

The academic standards at Tennessee are not different than most of the major high academic schools. Actually they are lower than many, EVERY UC in California had Freshmen classes with ave GPA's well above 3.85. TPM is spot on, it will all be about recruiting. CSF was in the middle of a baseball hotbed where most kids wanted to play. They literally have to look in a 30 mile radius.

It will interesting to see what happens. The next recruiting class will be critical for him.

Yeah a lot of average to slightly above average Tennessee HS students are surprised when their applications get rejected too. It's a better school than a lot of people realize and one of the hardest schools in the state to get into.
