Thank you for your reply.

We were contacted by their assistant coach who heads the recruiting for the team. Next week is my sons spring break so they want him to come take BP with/ before their home game. They have watched him field a few times now at his high schools games when they came down to scout/recruit and were impressed with his quickness and mechanics at third.

They want to see him swing the bat some and probably need to see him throw a little as well since he is also a pitcher. Pitching is not what most colleges would look at him for...but he is in the 80's as a 17 year old with good off speed stuff. Control of both a 4 seam and a fast seam, curve ball and slider are out of this world so who knows what his arm could be by the time he is a senior in college with the addition couple years of work under a good pitching coach.

I heard that UVA-Wise does not give out many academic scholarships ...according to what this coach told us tonight anyway... and we have several half tuition merit based scholarships already in hand from other schools like Carson Newman and TTU and ETSU. He also has a full ride including tuition, room and board scholarship which he was awarded his sophomore year over at the University of Arkansas-Little Rock and then another full ride at South Arkansas University if he should choose to go back to Arkansas...but its a long way over there and I think he has really taken to these Tennessee mountains where are the love of my life.

We just relocated back home to Tennessee this past summer after living out of state for the last 11 years, so he has not been on anyones radar here in Tennessee. We never dreamed they would close my husbands's plant so quickly, but Hubby is from Knoxville and getting back this close to home and family was a sweet blessing for us.

Now we are trying to learn what's available locally in the college scholarship game and find a new college here (something you typically begin your junior year in HS so we are a year behind now)

And of course if at all possible he would like to include 4 more years of baseball if he can. So that really makes it more difficult to find the school with the social life he likes and a chance to play baseball with them as well!

He is finally starting to be seen by the local college scouts, now that the season is underway. We are gettin more calls. But it does seem a little scarry as that "May 1" deadline approaches to think you have to make that final decision and turn down any scholarships you will not be using. Especially after already making the desicion last year and suddenly transfering and having to start all over.

Thanks again for your replys...any information at all is better then none. We had heard that their recruiting coach would tend to tell you at a game he would call you next week but then you never hear from him again...sorta like you were being snubbed. This new coach/recuriter was just hired in September and seems to be the kind to get out in the "field" and watch these prospects play. So perhaps things have changed.

I will let you know how it goes next week.

Thanks again.

Woodstock, I have seen them play but it was two years ago... so different staff and different kids I'm sure. They played well and seemed well disciplined... nothing that was alarming to me.

I will say that TN provides bunches of great programs including in the eastern part of the state. You might want to explore more in your area for a fit financially and baseball wise.

Good luck to your son.... I know it's a stressful time! Smile
Tusculum has a fantastic baseball program no doubt.

UVA-Wise is less expensive having to pay out of state tuition then Tusculum...so that is one con To tusculum..they are proud of their diploma no doubt.

UVA-Wise is closer to us then all but ETSU in Johnson City.

Not that close matters. My son has a full ride academic scholarship at both University of Arkansas - LR and South Arkansas university.

He has been accepted at TTU in cookeville, also at ETSU and Also at Carson Newman. CN has offered him a 1/2 Tuition scholarship which makes it about the same cost at TTU without a scholarship at all!

We have so many factors to consider as he makes his decision...and you all know that baseball is a big factor to a kid that loves the game. As parents we are trying to help him consider the Academic side as well...life does go on after baseball! (even though a 17 year old is not yet aware of that)

Very impressed with this little college. I think their baseball coaches have their priorities straight and also know a thing or two about baseball.

We have some decisions to make so we are planning a second visit back to the college when we can spend a little more time, today we had to get home for a Highschool game so we only had a couple hours to spend there.

I am very please with what I've seen this far.

If coach banner is still up there he a a good guy. That conference is competitive but the overall quality of baseball is much better at the DII schools like CN and TC. I think coach Griffin at CN knows baseball as good as anybody and TC must be doing something right. I think the quality of education will be very comprable at all the smaller schools.
Yes Banner is still head coach at Wise. We really like their new assistant coach as well.

We have know coach Griffin for several years now. Meet him through the UT Knoxville summer baseball camps and then this past fall our son attended a baseball camp at CN that was limited to 45 boys who were about half pitchers and half catchers. (catching is Griffins specialty) but we were very impressed with his pitching coach.

Tennessee Technological College is on our list as well. They seem to be in rebuilding years with all new baseball coaching staff.

Tough decisions still lay ahead of us that's for sure.

ETSU is yet another college where he has been accepted academically. But do you choose a college entirely on academics and throw baseball away after High School or do you try to combine both the sport you love and higher education for 4 more year??? Head tells you one thing (be logical) and your heart says another.
