You're in the right place...

Have done extensive research on the UNLV program ie: academics, coaches, players, talked to former players. Been through Junior Day and recruiting with them. Have talked to the academic advisor at length. Program is well funded, successful, on the rise, getting successful recruiting classes, comitted to education, success on the field and the personal growth of players. Great baseball facilities, Really nice 3,000 seat stadium, play a very tough non conference schedule (Fullerton, LSU, Texas, AZ, CAL, Pepperdine...), program thrives on communication, teamwork, comittment...Love the coaches, they are direct, clear and communicate better than most any we experienced during recruting.

Mountain West Conference; Air Force, New Mexico, San Diego State, BYU, Utah, adding TCU this year(will upgrade the conference). UNLV has won the conference for the last three years and got to the NCAA regionals for the last two years. Fairly weak conference as DI goes but the non-conference schedule is as good as any.

Coaching staff:

Head coach: Buddy Gouldsmith, been there for 2 years, former scout and assistant at UNLV, Tulane (WS apperances with them), Associate scout with the Giants, among other experience.

Assistant and Recruiter; Scott Malone, Assistant Texas Arlington, UT San Antonio. Played at TCU. All american, SWC Player of the year.

Volunteer Assistant: Chuck Hazzard: Played at Florida. Two World Series Apperances, All Tournament College World Series, all SWC.

Assistant: Nate Yeskie, pitching coach UNLV single season strike out leader.

Anything else? Impressions?

Aware of those. Without getting into specifics that have no place on this board, sometimes in the end such moves work best for all. To be fair to the program, Sometimes kids make mistakes going in, OR going out. Again am a big proponent of fit.

DO know of programs that are definately having problems. See no problem at UNLV. Still hold great enthusiasm for the program and the integrity of those involved. Still one of my couple favorite programs.
dbg, Funnel, and Asu...could not have said it any better...communication and quality people.

I would add two more points...

Point #1 April '04 UNLV Junior day - there were approximately 15 players attending.

April '05 UNLV Junior day - there had to be 70 players attending. Now looks can be deceiving, but I have been to 8 junior days and have not seen a better looking group of recruits.

Don't know for sure, but I would figure that the same number of invitations were sent out both years. I would have to believe that the dramatic difference in attendance would have to be due to the grapevine reputation of the program. Would suggest that they are doing something right and moving forward.

Point #2. If you look at the UNLV NLI list for the class of '05, you will see the son's of both Don Aase (Pitcher '77-'90 Red Sox, Angels, Orioles, Mets, Dodgers) and Bob Brenly (C/1B '81-89 Giants, Jays. Manager Diamondbacks '01-'04, WS Ring '01). Now this may not mean anything but if these two former players who know the world of baseball intimately, would trust their sons to UNLV Baseball, this year, then it would seem to say something about the quality of the program.

Isn't that a football mentality? At least that is what all my friends who are football fans have told me.

Don Aase's older son was a senior at Esperanza when my son was a junior. The big story, tho, is that Don was our son's first pitching coach and he thought AJ would never be able to throw a circle change or a splitter because he had short thick fingers. I am just glad his hands grew with the rest of him laugh

Here are some outside observations...

Like any school...I am sure they would like to recruit only hard working, 4.0 GPA, team players, with 5 tools.
Like any school....they would love to recruit kids that could go high in the draft out of high school but choose to stay and play.
Like any school...they would love to have all their players drafted first round, and start the reputation gravy train.

Is happening at UNLV? Realistically, no, not yet. UNLV is not a Texas in terms of recruiting. They still have to chase quality players. Stanford, Texas, et al often have players knocking on their doors to get in.

On the other hand don't underestimate the players they do get. This is one of those programs that simply wins: three straight conference championships, and made three straight NCAA regionals. And it wins with a team concept, good coaching and a bunch of hard working players.

UNLV is a the kind of program where a quality player can flourish, and unlike a top school, can very well do it immediately, not wait years. IMO it won't be long before more smart players are going to realize that and UNLV hits a new level.

As for the '05 draft picks. UNLV changed coaches 3 years ago and this class was part of that transition. Still, UNLV Had 5 players drafted last year. 4 pitchers and a SS. All but one signed. Part of their recruting pitch is that scouts love to come watch players at UNLV and top 25 teams love to come play there because of the entertainment factor. Beging in Vegas, and with their nonconference scheudle ( Fullerton, LSU, Texas, AZ,...) IMO UNLV players do get seen.

Of the 10 UNLV reruits listed for '05, 4 were drafted, 1 signed. Of the 6 freshman signed to NLI's for the class of '05, TeamOne's scouting section has UNLV getting:
the 44th rated LHP in the class of '05
the 11th rated 3B in the class of '05
the 26th rated 1B in the class of '05
the 27th rated 1B in the class of '05
and one of TeamOnes top 30 rated two way players in the class of '05

With none of these freshman '05 players signing with MLB, it will be interesting to see if this recruting class gets a rating for the scouting services. Obviously many of the top schools recruits get drafted and what might look like a top recruitng class can get Ouched.

Park....Right you are. I am not sure, but from what I see the addition of TCU as predominantly a football move but the result for basdeball is that TCU will forever change the landscape in MWC Baseball. They are a power program at the next level. Recently their recruting classes have been among the best in the country. If for that alone you will see more MWC kids getting drafted.

As for my draft projections?...good question. Will have to research that one. I'll give you one right up front. Matt Luca,6"6" 215 RHP, UNLV Friday Night Pitcher, Had a sub par year last year and was drafted much lower than expected. Assuming he doesn't sign, look for a big, big year from him, and a high draft spot.

uh, no. The UC Davis pitching coach used the same analogy in complimenting my son at the Stanford baseball camp. Coach Hazzard once said the same thing about the boys he coached here in Dallas. IMO the analogy illustrates a willingness to be coached, respect for the coach, and a 'never quit' attitude towards competition.
dbg_fan ...

Really was only trying to interject a bit of humor here though I must say that in all the years our son has been associated with baseball, that expression has never been used by any coach he has met to describe a baseball player's mentality and attitude towards the game. Only one instance when it was used and that was an assistant baseball coach in high school who also coached the football team ... and he used the expression as a way of differentiating between a football player's approach to his game and a baseball player's approach. Not sure I have ever looked at it in the way you are, so as one HSBBW old timer says ... learning something new everyday on the HSBBW.
.

Others may know much better than I do....but with a little research this is what one can find out....and what I figure...

UNLV has had its way with the conference for the last few years, but TCU has to come into the MWC as the favorite this year and a perennial conference powerhouse.

Ranked 22nd (better than anyone in the MWC) for most of last year TCU is a legitimate NCAA contender. They lost their two top pitchers one was 15-1, The second was 7-3. That will hurt, but they retained 3 out of their top 4 hitters and had an excellent recruting class last year that is maturing nicley it appears.

The good news is that the TCU recruiting class of '05 was one of the best in the country. 10 quality recruits.

The bad news was that they lost the four best to the draft, losing three in the second round, including a 98 MPH RHP (fastest in the draft), an in infielder (who was rated by baseball America best tools in the draft as having the best position arm stregnth in the draft), and a LHP from a AZ JC who had a ridiculious SO per batters faced ratio. Also lost one recruit in the 15 round.

So....out of 10 '05 signs, 6 showed up this fall including two all state players from Texas. So...It would appear that they are young AND still very talented though not top of the heap as they might have been.

AND, Schlossnagle simply wins. Nice interview with him this week on the TCU baseball website....Also found one from 11/10/04 that says that basically the team is talented and that they were recruting the class of '05 to fill holes as they did so well recruting with the '04 class.

Figure your right...TCU, UNLV, BYU seem to be the teams to beat this year

Any comments or feedback on the UNLV scrimmages? Did any one get a chance to see the games? When is Luca due to return to the bump and does UNLV have enough depth at pitching to win 4 titles in a row? And can UNLV make up for the HR power they lost (Transfers out)? One more question for the road, How did Tony do at San Diego St. with his recruiting class and how many did he lose to the draft? Is Tony ready to win this thing!
NPDE...I like Parky better.... Smile

Good questions. Few answers. UNLV 2006 is a puzzle.

Did not see any fall games or workouts, but here is my personal 2006 UNLV perspectus:

Luca? Will be ready in the spring, will DEFINATELY have a BIG year and will set a tone Friday night for the team and the weekend ever week.

Yep, losing 20+ hr's will definately hurt....but as I'm going over the 2006 names to figure out where the offfense comes from this year...when it suddenly occurs to me that on this team the names are not so important...The funny thing about the Rebels is that they used the "comittee" approach on the bump and at the plate last year to win their third straight title in a huge rebuilding year. It's clear that outside of Friday night with Luca...if they get it done this year it will again be by comittee.

On Paper....It's already over. Turn in your scorebooks. I would give the conference hands down to TCU. Beyond that...BYU had a great year and if memory serves me correctly came within a came within a couple outs of winning the conference. SDSU? I hate to say this but SDSU chronically underacheives. They get some great recruits but ?...That being said...they are a threat every year and dangerous and could step up.

UNLV 2006? On paper I pick them to battle for third in the conference. The good news for UNLV is that the games are not played on paper...there is team chemistry that the Rebels create that fosters success. While it's hard not to choose TCU to take it...The Rebels are a hard team to count out. I expect to see TCU and UNLV in the conference final. TCU takes the conference and the NCAA bid unless UNLV's pitching staff acheives big.

Rebel watch list:

Luca 6'6" RHP: Friday Night guy, Great Year, high draft...Beamon OF: Transfer from National Champion Texas, Started half their games, need more be said?...Bird, Cruz: Returning all conference...Bonnell 1B: Here is one of the step up guys who will fill that power gap. Big break out year, draft pick...Borba OF: JC transfer who will be counted on to also fill the power gap...Brock RHP: workhorse of the staff..Navarro UTL, the ultimate left handed Utility guy. Will be all conference..Wagner RHP: Last years mountain West Coinference MVP. Will shine...Pupo LHP: will see lots of innings, important piece...Scruggs INF FR: Could really contribute....Here is guy to watch: Skogley 6'6" LHP...
.

Thanks parky. Cool

While there is no questioning Tony's character, knowledge of the game, love for the game, his value to SDSU as recruiter, instructor, coach, fund raiser, alumni, PR guy....but there are those who have said that ESPN is the only job he already has.

Hard to stretch yourself that thin. Maybe I am wrong...but from what I have seen winning consistently at the DI level if definately a two job profession. The problem is that both those jobs are head coach. It's an 80 hour a week. 365 day a year comittment.

From the outside....It would appear that the school is totally comitted to him and change will only happen there when he chooses it.

Great post on UNLV. That was my son's 1st choice. Dealt with Malone and Hazzard for months. Hazzard was the one who evaluated my son's videos and malone made all the contacts after that. We were disappointed when Malone told us they went with JUCOs. Ases was the only HS player they signed. They were looking for immediate impact and this year they appeared to be going mostly HS players based on early signings. Probably looking for depth for the coming years.
The school and facilities are great (mahogany lockers) Wilson stadium is beautiful and there staff is top rate.
I was sorry to hear Hazzard has moved on. He was great and told me his life story when putting my son on their recruiting list.
Malone taught me most of what I knew about recruiting in the early stages. A real gentleman anda straight shooter.
BHD...

Thanks.

I echo your observations...the quality of the individuals involved...the facilities... Really sorry to see Hazzard go. Have met the new assistant/pitching coach (Yeskie) and he is another quality guy. Malone is one of the most genuine people I have met in college baseball.

Graduation and the draft at UNLV cut deeply. To stay on top I believe they took more JC's in the incoming class of '05 than they would have liked to. Also had a couple transfers in.

The class of '06 is more freshman oriented, and IMO is potentially a stronger recruiting class top to bottom. Depending upon how many actually makes it to school in fall '06.

Hope your son is recovering from the tragedy and that he has the best baseball year of his life.

Cool
Thanks Observer.

He will never forget Grant but they have to get on with school.
So far my son is living large. He had Thanksgiving diner on a coast guard ship and Sat attended a basketball game against Clemson at the collesium in Charleston. I hope he dosn't get bored wjen he comes home. He attended a football game last week and they beat Coastal Carolina to go 7-4 for the season after loosing their 1st 3 games straight. He was very excited.

Parky...

The crystal ball says that there will be plenty of bats at UNLV this year, had some very key losses off last years team but will be fine at the plate...

That won't be the issue...Pitching has some lingering issues going in...Limited innings by some key arms...COULD be a rough beginning...

But by mid season the staff will be simply outstanding and looking very solid going into the league season...

If you are a UNLV fan the first month will be exciting and a minefield...Texas, Fullerton, Pepperdine, and Cal...#1,#4,#11,#25...it's a load.......This is the way the Coach likes to prepare and increases the stregnth of schedule, but got off to a horrid start last year and still won the MWC and made the NCAA regionals...

But mark the TCU series at TCU as the real key for the season...

BHD.....

Aase is a freshman Lefty with superstar genes and potential but had TJ last spring and is redshirting from what I know. Took lots of JC guys....but They actually have 4 other freshman Brenly a huge catcher from AZ whose dad playerd and managed Pro ball and has a ring, Xavier Scruggs who is simply a stud and I think will see lots of innings, Troy Harlander from the midwest who I am told was heavily recruited by the Big 10 and another huge left handed hitter from CA.

Will they be ready for Pepperdine?...I love what Coach Goldsmith does with talent and the team always over achieves and competes...I would never count them out... but #11 without some arms...smoke and mirrors?....

Cool 44

Right you are, big loss of Hazzard, heard many great things about him.

Hazzards knolwedge of the team will certainly provide the Waves with some extra help, but between the draft, transfers, and graduations, UNLV only returned half their squad. Returned 7 pitchers and 8 positions.

Draftees? To be honest I haven't had enough of a chance to see them to judge but from what I know Beamon is a transfer from U. of Texas who played a bunch last year and that should speak for itself, Bowman is only a soph, SR. Bird is tapped as a Star but unsure how he rates as a draft pick, would figure if he were real high he would have gone last year but he could have a great year.

Others...1B Bonnell is a darkhorse had a very good year last year lets see if he can follow it up...have heard some good reports on Borba...have said this before but my best candidate is Matt Luca. Had a disappointing year last year but I predict by mid season the scouts will all be out and very interested.

And what about all those guys with Canadian connections, BHD, that's worth something Right?! Tell me about Mosher...

Cool 44

Mosher is from western Canada and I hear he is a tough pitcher. I can't remember the school he was at in Texas but he led the conference.
i have never seen himas he lives 3000 miles from us.
I talked to Hazzard for over an hour when he called about my son. He was in the NYY organization untill he was released. He was the one who evaluated my son's DVD after an unofficial visit. He called and said they were very interested and considered him a top prospect for them. My son loved the coaches and the school.
