It's been known for about a year, that this was in the works. UNO couldn't recover from Hurricane Katrina. Did Dillard or Xavier ever reopen, even not having athletics?
I suspect their will be more downsizing, across the nation, but particularly in Louisiana. With a failing prep school system, it's not really surprising.

A. It's been rumored, and one of the main reasons Head Coach Walter left for WFU.

B. Assuming you are referring to UNO Baseball, there is no one who would agree with such nonsense.

The Privateers had back-to-back NCAA Regional appearances in 2007 and ’08. The 2008 Baseball team under T Walters leadership went 43-21 and became the first UNO team to earn an NCAA Regional at-large bid since 2000.

Retract your statement, stet
I don't think there is any argument that UNO has stuggled to recover from Katrina. Certainly the baseball program has been very successful but they need the funding from the university to continue to be successful and the school's financial problems have been well documented.

When all is said and done, I don't think this will be a horrible move. Think of this, there are DI facilities with a school who is used to a DI mindset. Plus, this is a much larger school than other southern DIIIs (10,000+ students). The school will now be able to save money on many fronts, especially scholarships and extensive travel needs.

I think the last DI to go DIII (Birmingham-Southern) has shown in their first two years that they will come out of the trasition quite well. I think this will be a good move for the UNO, their atheltic department, and if people give it a few years it won't be the worst thing to ever happen to the baseball program.
Bear?
Retract what?
DBL2theGap gets it. And I tend to agree. It may be better, in the long run.
I'm in New Orlean a few times each year to see my son play. The whole city is struggling. There has been much talk of the probability this last year, several artcles in the Times Picayune for a while now.

Wrong, Sorry.

There is no one who would agree with such nonsense
that UNO Baseball couldn't recover from Hurricane Katrina.

I am in Avondale often. I have watched my friend
Coach Walter and the UNO Baseball Team recover from the devastating storm.

Let me repeat, since you missed it the first time...the Privateers had back-to-back NCAA Regional appearances in 2007 and ’08. The 2008 Baseball team under T Walter leadership went 43-21 and became the first UNO team to earn an NCAA Regional at-large bid since 2000.

And yes, the Baseball Team budget and program is changing, and the reason why Coach Walter left the program he loved. DLB2 might get it.

Which obviously means that the university couldn't recover from the hurricane and that other colleges were facing the same problems and that this was causing budget problems which effect sports.

CPLZ & gitnby,
Sometimes even a "drawn out picture" doesn't work. Roll Eyes

Yall get an A in reading comprehension! Smile

Bear,
It didn't matter how well the baseball program, or the coach was. The monetary support from alum, student enrollment, the Feds, nor the State, wasn't there.
So, without money, the Board & Chancellor could no longer JUSTIFY remaining D-1, partucularly since the school was down to 9 sports, with another 18 mo. "grace" from NCAA to add the sports dropped as a result of KATRINA.
Comprende?
UNO kind of got a double whammy, Katrina, Aug 2005, then the economy this last year. Tough on many schools, particularly in the Gulf region.!!

Northern Iowa dropped baseball after last spring. Several other D-1 schools are taking a serious look at going DIII.

Corrected school
