For those unsigned seniors who are still looking to play at a D1 school next year, is there still hope? Is it realistic to believe that college coaches are still looking to fill roster spots for the 2005 season? My son who started the recruiting process late, because of an injury, is still interested in playing D1 baseball. He recently (last month) attended two PG showcases and did well enough for scouts to rate him relatively high and say that he is a solid D1 prospect. He's called several coaches, left messages, but response has been spotty at best. Any suggestions? He is beginning to run into school deadlines for orientation and housing:-).

I would make sure that you have all your ducks in a row for a plan B, whether that is a JC or a 4 year school. As far as late interest, my son was a late sign this Spring but has recently been contacted by a couple of schools. One he had heard from last fall but now has a new head coach, and another that he had never heard from. Keep playing, keep calling, keep an open mind.
My name is Jason Beck. I am the Head Coach at Nyack College in NY. We are a Div. II christian college. I recruit from all over the map and still have money available. We have 12 kids from Florida, 2 from AZ., 4 from VA. Tell me a little about your son and if hes interested maybe it would be a good fit. I can be reached on my cell at 845-536-3413. Thanks. I look forward to talking to you. I hope I can help.
Forkball,
Because of the lateness of the season, I believe your son's best bet at this point would be to go the JC route. (if D1 is his ultimate goal)
I know of an unsigned senior who just was picked up by a D1 BUT this same school signed another boy we know this same time LAST year and ended up "convincing" him to leave. My personal opinion is at this point, the D1's are done. Maybe filling a few spots, but these players will be just that...fillers. Better to go and PLAY, especially in light of your son's injury. Let him get some innings and find a place that really WANTS him 'cause he can play. Not just because they need a body.
Thanks for the comments. He's getting ready to shut things down with respect to looking at D1 schools, in about a week, but he has been in touch with a couple of schools who still have roster openings. I agree that many schools are relatively set in their rosters, and filling a roster spot is not an optimal situation. Even so, their seems to be be a dynamic and unpredictable nature to all of this pull_hair

We're in the same boat, although my son was looking for a JUCO. I finally convinced him about a month ago to get on the phone, and he beat the phone lines down calling coaches and got NO response.

He also went to a PG Showcase and got an OK rating, pretty much where we thought he should be. We were really hoping a JUCO somewhere would want a 6'4" LHP and have the coaching to improve his speed.

He has finally decided to attend a Division II four year school about 65 miles away. He has fewer chances of playing ball there, but most of the JUCOs had little to no dormitory facilities, and he/we were not interested in all the mess that comes with an apartment.

He still says he's going to contact the coach once he gets there and try to walk-on/redshirt.

Even if he doesn't, I think he has chosen a school that fits his personality, and will give him a good education.

He has also shown a serious interest in working as a counselor at Boy Scout Summer Camp (8 weeks living at camp) next summer, and if he is serious about that, then of course college baseball will be over for him, cause I know the coach will want him to play summer ball somewhere.

The silver lining in all of this is he's going to finish his Eagle :-) He was told that Eagles make more money working at summer camp. Just a couple of weeks ago, I was fearing that he wouldn't be playing ball and he wouldn't finish his Eagle. At least one of those will happen now.

Kungaloosh,
Great post about there being life outside of baseball. And it sounds as if your son made a wise choice....go where you'd like to go to school, not "go to baseball" Cool
Hopefully it will work out for him, and the coach will give him an opportunity. Does he have a summer coach or HS coach who would be willing to make a phone call to the college coach and introduce your son? That might go a long way to giving him a decent shot.....
Best of luck
