I have a question regarding college coaches attendance at camps throughout the year. I read on the SOMD Baseball website says that it is an instructional camp so that college coaches are permitted to attend. It was my understanding that there was a new "dead zone" (from Nov 9 to Mar 1?) during which a college coach was not permitted to make contact with potential recruits unless the instructional camp was on campus. What is the actual rule on this? If what I understand is in fact correct, would camps employing college coaches during this period be in violation of NCAA rules which would effect campers recruitment? If someone would be so kind as to state the actual NCAA rule on this I would appraciate it!
Hey just completed the 1st session with SOMD; Seemed very professional and well run. There were a few D1 coaches there that are in fact paid to instruct. My only complaint would be the lack of physical activity. We pitched for about 12 mins, then we did fielding drills for about 20 mins, then Doug Johnson(former Major League Oriole) talked with us, as well as the founder of Baseball Factory. I personally found the Baseball Factory a little bit out to get your money. Then again what do I know. Hopefully they will let the pitchers hit next week.
Mr. McCormick, Thank you for the response but it still doesn't clarify things for me. Do you know the actual NCAA rule stating that this type of contact is acceptable? Or where would one go to find out? I would think that a contact is a contact whether they are paid or not but not knowing what the actual rule is, I am certainly not an expert.
Braves7,
Here's the rule:
13.13.1.3 Recruiting Calendar Exceptions
The interaction during sports camps and sports clinics between prospects and those coaches employed by the camp or clinic is not subject to the recruiting calendar restrictions. However, an institutional staff member employed at any camp or clinic (e.g., counselor, director) is prohibited from recruiting any prospect during the time period that the camp or clinic is conducted (i.e., from the time the prospect reports to the camp or clinic until the conclusion of all camp activities). The prohibition against recruiting includes extending verbal or written offers of financial aid to any prospect during his or her attendance at the camp or clinic. Other coaches wishing to attend the camp as observers must comply with appropriate recruiting contact and evaluation periods. In addition, institutional camps or clinics may not be conducted during a dead period. (Revised: 4/3/02)

Hope this helps.
Al McCormick
