Upper Deck Cougars announce try-outs for their 15-18 year old teams. Try-outs will be held on August 8 between 9a and 12 noon at Flick Field which is the varsity field for Lockport High School. We are looking for elite level players at each of these levels who are interested in winning and playing for one of the more established programs in the area.

Hi, I'm relatively new to the organization so I don't know who Joe Benson but hopefully he's doing well. Thanks for the note and hopefully we get a big turn-out especially at the 15 and 16 year old age-groups. Also, I should let everyone know that the Lockport varsity field is not on campus it is on the corner of Division and Garfield.

Former Upper Deck Cougar

    Joe Benson: No.9, OF

    2007 Team: Beloit Snappers

Acquired: Twins 2nd round pick in 2006 out of Joliet Catholic Academy High School (IL)

The scoop: For Joe Benson, the transition to his first full season months were a struggle. Although his batting average was in the .220s much of the season, you could see the talent was there. As the season went on, his numbers got better. And, since late August, he has been hitting non-stop, including throughout the Snappers' run in the playoffs. He ended the season with a very respectable .255/.347/.368 line with 18 doubles, eight triples and five RBI. He had 18 stolen bases, although he was caught 16 times. In 432 at bats, he struck out 124 times, or once every 3.5 at bats. As a top of the order hitter, that number will need to improve. But from all reports, Benson projects to being a five-tool player.

2008 Projection: Should spend the year at Ft. Myers

Potential: a 20/20 type of hitter, with a gold glove

Prediction: Could be in Minnesota in 2011

A more current look...

Thanks for the info on Joe Benson. It's amazing to see the kind of talent talent that has worn the UDC uniform over the past several years. The teams moving up to 17/18 for next year are pretty stocked so there should be some players from these teams moving onto the next level when their times comes. Thanks again for passing along the information.

That son played at Riverside-Brookfield HS and played travel ball at Prairie Gravel, Berwyn Bulldogs, White Sox Academy, and Illinois Sports Academy.

He will be playing for Lambuth University in Jackson, TN this fall. Previously he had played for Christian Brothers University and Southwest Tennessee C.C. which are both in Memphis.

He's fought through a few injuries and surgery, but he's hanging in there.

My other son and his story will have to wait for another day.

Again, much success with your team...have fun!
