Not sure I like the idea of son number 1 missing three days of classes, but USA South gets underway in minor league park in Burlington, NC (Burlington Indians, Cleveland's Rookie League team), part of USA South Spring Sports Festival. From the Commonwealth, CNU, Ferrum, Averett and Shenandoah all looking for the automatic NCAA bid that comes with winning the tournament.

There will be significantly more at large bids in D III this year, a very good thing, and almost all schools are out for the year by the time the NCAA tournament starts, another very good thing (academically anyway).

You're correct, and they won in 12 innings over CNU 4-3, finishing around midnight last night. Methodist is now in the catbird seat, not playing again till Friday. CNU gets an early wakeup call and plays today at 1:30, and every game is now an elimination game, a tough road.

Shenandoah defeated Ferrum and Averettt lost to NC Weslyan yesterday. Averett and Ferrum play an elimination game at 9:30 a.m. Thursday, Shenandoah plays North Carolina Weslyan at 10:00, CNU plays Averett/Ferrum winner at 1:00 (tough day for those guys too-back to back games), then Greensboro plays NCW/Shenandoah loser at 4:30. Methodist gets to relax till Friday..to the victor goes the spoils!
ornets score eight in the 10 th for the victory

BURLINGTON, N.C. – It took extra innings, but the Shenandoah Hornets jumped all over Ferrum College in the tenth inning, scoring eight in the extra frame during a 13-6 Shenandoah win in the opening round of the USA South Tournament at Burlington Athletic Stadium.

The Hornets (24-13) put up eight runs in the 10 th inning on five hits and one error. Steven Todd singled with the bases loaded to score one run and Daniel Bowers followed with a walk for the second run of the inning. Scott Disch hit a single down the left field line for another Shenandoah run to advance the lead to 8-5. David Jenkins hit a two-RBI single up the middle to increase the lead to 10-5. Daniel Ziccardy, Adam Kuchemba, and Ryan Anderson all added one RBI late in the inning for the 13-5 cushion, which turned out to be the final.

Matt Gammon singled to lead off the 10 th, went to third on a single by Brett Thomas, and found the plate on an RBI by Jesse Bowles. However, the Hornets didn’t allow another run and held on for the win.

The Hornets took an early 5-3 lead after three innings, scoring two runs in both the first and the third, and adding one run in the second. The Panthers (25-10-1) tied things up in the fifth with two runs on three hits and an error. Brent Sowers led off the inning with a single. Matt Gammon followed with a groundout, but a throwing error on the Hornets first baseman pushed Sowers across the plate to trim the Ferrum deficit to 5-4. Brett Thomas then belted a homer over the left field wall to knot the game at 5-5. Four scoreless innings followed, forcing the extra frame where Shenandoah took control.

Jenkins, Ziccardy, and Kuchemba all had two hits and two RBIs for Shenandoah. Anderson was 3-for-6 with one RBI, while Bowers went 2-for-4 with an RBI. Nick Sborz was credited with the Shenandoah win in one and one-third innings of work. He allowed no hits in relief.

For Ferrum, Thomas, Nick Baker, Bowles, and Sowers all had two hits. Curtis Taylor had five strikeouts in the starting pitcher role. Jimmy Holm took the loss, allowing four runs in one inning.

Shenandoah will advance to face N. C. Wesleyan at Elon University at 10 a.m. Ferrum will face Averett at 9:30 a.m. at Burlington Athletic Stadium.
CNU overcomes a 6-1 deficit to defeat Ferrum, and moves on to play at 3:30 tomorrow against Greensboro, who knocked out Shenandoah this afternoon, 8-3. Tough road for the Captains who need to win two more to get to the title round, and then beat somebody twice to win it all.

Congrats to Mike Giarizzi on being named USA South Rookie of the Year. He can definitely play.
