Runners on 1st and 2nd and pitcher throws a wild pitch which bounces off the backstop/fence and takes a strong bounce to go up the 3rd base line. On the wild pitch, catcher took his mask off which he is holding in his right hand. Ball is about to pass him and go up the 3rd base line (in foul territory). Catcher sticks out his mask in his right hand to stop the ball. The ball hits the mask and stops rolling so the base runners do not advance.

Is the catcher using the catcher's mask while in his hand to stop the ball allowed? If not, what would be the proper call?
