My son is faced with a dilemna. He is a "extremely good" (high school coaches quote not mine) baseball player with 4 tools and speed is not too bad. He has played American Legion ball this year (coached by the High School baseball staff). The team is not very good but there are 3 other high quality players on it. He feels like he has gone backwards this year and does not want to play in that program next year. The issue is that as it is coached by his HS staff will taking his 8th grade year off from legion and playing USSSA affect his standing his Freshman year? Ultimately the question is does he stand a better chance at being seen by colleges playing HS or USSSA ball?

It sounds as if your son is an incoming Freshman. First off, alot of things can change in the next 4 years. Players that are good at 13-14 are many times passed up by the late bloomers who have grown and worked hard to get better. My advice is to seek out a competitive travel team in your area if you want him playing with/against the best competition. Exposure to college coaches usually does not occur until the player is a Jr/Sr in high school. Either way, he needs to keep working harder than the next guy and if he is the player you say he is, the coaches will find him whether he is playing Legion/High School or USSSA ball.
JFegley,

Welcome to HSBBWeb.

The answer lies in where your son wants to go to college, and where do those colleges seek recruits. You have a few years to help him figure that out or provide guidance. As 62423 points out, a lot can change in 4 years.

In my neck of the woods, there are programs that recruit almost exclusively in state. Legion and high school baseball become very important exposure points for those schools. Travel baseball becomes more important as the recruiting geography expands for state/regional/national talent. In my experience, there becomes a point of diminishing travel baseball returns with regard to $$$ and exposure for some people. I don't think you can go wrong playing Legion baseball now and figuring out the rest as it comes and your son matures in high school.

Best of luck!
For an incoming freshman I would say Leigon if the HS staff coaches the team. USSSA really fades as far quality goes after 12U.But there are other options out there as far as travel goes.Leigon is margainal baseball in our area.As your son gets older, find the best travel team that your son would plenty of playing time on and you will really see a difference in the levels of baseball available
