Jeff Curtis resigns, Darin Thomas appointed new head coach

Nov. 15, 2007

An eight-year career at UT Arlington - highlighted by two trips to the NCAA tournament - ended Thursday when Mavericks baseball coach Jeff Curtis announced his resignation, effective immediately.

Pete Carlon, UTA's Director of Intercollegiate Athletics, announced that Associate Head Coach Darin Thomas has been appointed as Curtis's replacement.

"I want to thank Jeff for his contributions to our baseball program and wish him the best in his future endeavors," Carlon said. "He took over a program during a difficult time in 2001 and, along with Darin Thomas, continued to build a nationally-respected program. He has been the steward of a program that has had tremendous success during his tenure with two NCAA Tournament appearances, four former student-athletes who played in the Major Leagues last season and dozens of all-conference performers. He is well-respected in the baseball coaching profession, and we will miss him greatly. We certainly respect his decision."

Curtis, 40, took over the UTA program on July 12, 2001, after serving as an assistant coach for two seasons under Clay Gould, who passed away after a battle against cancer. With Curtis taking over head coaching duties and Thomas assisting, the Mavericks advanced to the NCAA Tournament in 2001 and defeated Houston, 7-6, in the regional tournament.

Curtis finishes his Mavericks career with a record of 166-188 after six years as head coach.

The win total is the second-most in UTA history behind the 756 victories earned by former coach Butch McBroom.

"I appreciate the opportunity UT Arlington gave me over the past six years," said Curtis. "It is every boy's dream to spend a part of their life around baseball. I am looking forward to the next chapter in my life and pursue other business endeavors."

Thomas, now in his eighth year with the program, becomes the sixth head coach in the program's history. UT Arlington opens the 2008 season Feb. 22 against Arkansas-Little Rock at Clay Gould Ballpark at 3 p.m.

"Coach Thomas is a man of great character and unquestioned integrity and an outstanding baseball coach who has earned the opportunity to lead this program," Carlon said. "I believe this appointment will be well-received by both our baseball student-athletes and our baseball alumni. I am confident he will continue to build upon our rich baseball tradition at UT Arlington."

UTA signed 21 new recruits this year (5 Freshmen and 16 JC Transfers) and have very few spots open for next year.

They also signed Texas Tech transfer Eric Wright from Country Day this week. Eric is one of the best pure hitters I have seen over the past few years in the DFW area. Eric will join Michael Choice and Marcus Limon, 3 very talented freshmen hitters.

KD, not sure what problems you referring to this year, I know my son is very happy with Coach Thomas.

I may be mistaken, but wasn't Curtis the pitching coach under Clay. Man, after Butch left, he was exactly what UTA needed. Terrible thing.

There have been way too arm injuries at that school. Could have been the issues from the past. He didn't pitch who should have, over pitched some. There have been some rumblings over there the last couple of years. Some good players have left and there is more turnover than usual. I don't exactly know what. Maybe one of these days I'll find out.

BASEBALL SIGNS ARIZONA COLLEGE PITCHER
Left-hander Joe Anson had a 2.02 earned run average for Central Arizona College

Nov. 26, 2007

ARLINGTON, Texas - UT-Arlington's baseball program has announced the signing of junior college pitcher Joe Anson to a national letter-of-intent.

A left-hander and Arizona native, Anson turned in an impressive freshman campaign at Central Arizona College before becoming the first signee for first-year Mavericks coach Darin Thomas. Anson had a 6-3 record with a 2.02 earned run average last season.

In 801/3 innings of work, Anson allowed just 70 hits, struck out 58 batters and issued just 20 walks, helping his team to a 43-21 overall record and NJCAA Region I championship. Academically, Anson finished his freshman year of college with a 4.0 grade-point average.

"Joe plays for an outstanding program and has already pitched in some very big ball games for Central Arizona," Thomas said. "He should step in right away next year and be one of our top pitchers. We're looking forward to getting him on campus."

Because the Mavericks are fielding such a young team this year - only four seniors are on the 35-man roster - the coaching staff probably will not sign additional players in the early signing period, Thomas said. The Mavericks will continue to recruit for the late signing period, but with so many players coming back for the 2009 season, Thomas said fans should not expect a large recruiting class this year.

UTA has only one senior on this year's pitching staff, left-hander Eamon Donovan.
