I am a high school freshman and I am starting shortstop and bat second on the freshman team. I am doing great in the field and pretty good at the plate. I was wondering whether the high school coaches only look at the performance of a previous year to determine whether a player will play varsity or jv, or do they also see how the player has improved and take that into account? I am planning to work extremely hard this offseason and hopefully I will grow a lot before next season(I am the shortest player on the team). What do you think my chances are of playing varsity next year?
Thanks in advance for any help.

As a coach I can only speak for myself. We watch the younger kids and we are very interested in how they are progressing. Each year is a whole new ball game. When we come out the next year the evaluation process starts out all over. We could careless what you played the year before. If you are good enough to help us on Varsity you play varsity. If you are still in need of JV ball you play JV ball. Work hard and use the off season to get better and then let the cards fall where they fall. Good Luck
