I have been wanting to know this for a while. Everything I read says 85+ is where you want to be as a RHP if you want to pitch in college.
I am going to be a senior this year and will be working in front of colleges this fall. Just to give some background: Freshman year 84mph highest measured, Sophomore year 88 (closing games only- basically under 20 pitches), Junior year - starter (85mph highest measured but pitching average 95 pitches a game). About to start my senior year....
I played this summer and sat around 83-85 every inning and would pitch 5-6 innings every game. I had the most wins and least walks on the team. BUT.... here where I get lost... Another player on the team would go out and throw everything he had every pitch. First inning 89 top speed, second inning 85, third 79. had a lot of wild pitches and walks and usually only made 4 innings. I can throw a lot harder but I don't want to be like him and lose control and speed as the innings go by. It just seems the guy that throws harder had more coaches looking at him. He talked all summer about XX coaches talking to him while no one has spoke to me. I have better numbers across the board other than he is 6'3 and I am 5'11 lol
Is it better to be constant and a lower speed or should I just "chunk it" when the radar is on me? We will be in front of colleges this fall and I want to give myself all the chances I can for a scholarship. I am not looking for D1, I am looking at JUCO's. I also have the possibility as a catcher.
My summer team split my time between catching and pitching in the summer. Is it easier to get attention as a pitcher than catcher? I lead my team in batting average, slugging average, HR's when it comes to batting. I think I am a better catcher than pitcher but what do I know. High school I pitch only and DH and when I pitch they expect complete games.
So back to "chunk it". Should I just throw all I got for a inning or two? Should I keep doing what I am doing? I just don't want to be overlooked when I know I can hit close to or at 90 and with fall ball coming up, I was thinking, chunk it...
