THE UNKNOWN SOLDIER
by Billy Rose

There's a graveyard near the White
House
Where the Unknown Soldier lies,
And the flowers there are sprinkled
With the tears from mother's eyes.
I stood there not so long ago
With roses for the brave,
And suddenly I heard a voice
Speak from out the grave:

"I am the Unknown Soldier,
The spirit voice began
"And I think I have the right
To ask some questions man to man.

"Are my buddies taken care of?
Was their victory so sweet?
Is that big reward you offered
Selling pencils on the street?

"Did they really win the freedom
They battled to achieve?
Do you still respect that Croix de Guerre
Above that empty sleeve?

"Does a gold star in the window
Now mean anything at all?
I wonder how my old girl feels
When she hears a bugle call.
"And that baby who sang
Hello, Central, give me no man
Can they replace her daddy
With a military band?

"I wonder if the profiteers
Have satisfied their greed?
I wonder if a soldier's mother
Ever is in need?

"I wonder if the kings, who planned it all
Are really satisfied?
They played their game of checkers
And eleven million died.

"I am the Unknown Soldier
And maybe I died in vain,
But if I were alive and my country called,
I'd do it all over again.

I have a poem back at you. I wrote this at the age of 16 in high school:

The Vintage of the Post-War,
conceived through baby-rage,
our minds are stilled, our bodies chilled,
once more we take the stage.

The Unity of Coming Home!
(These warriors of wealth.)
How could a bullet, shell or bomb,
alter perfect health?

I see the flame being put to blame
as the Earth shakes loose with blood.
The empty arms of dying men
are covered by the flood.

And I myself am carried away,
unto the Sea of Past.
Let it be these non-sense wars
I shall not be the last.

Very good Bum...thought provoking indeed!

In observance of Veterans Day this Wednesday please thank any veteran you see.

And if you know their family thank them as well.

And then remember, the each and every day we enjoy freedom is the each and every day we should thank a veteran.

Thank you to all of our veterans, our soldiers, and their families.

Thank you to all the veterans on this board! For your sacrifices, dedication, and courage you have my utmost respect and admiration. Most Americans will never live a single day at or near the conditions that our war-time veterans have lived in and currently live in.

I will be praying for our current servicemen and women, their families, and the loved ones of those who made the ultimate sacrifice in service to their country.

WAG!

I can't thank the veterans and current men and women serving our country enough.

God Bless you!

Did the same last year Frank, Truly sobering is very well put. I think it's something all must experience once in their lifetime.
Very well done, indeed JPontiac.

A few months back, I was in the airport in a shop waiting for a flight and a soldier came in and was looking around. I offered to buy him a coke as he seemed to want one but appeared to not have the cash. He was genuinely tickled about it...a stranger buying him a coke. And, thinking about it afterward, I didn't feel as tickled at this same stranger putting his life on the line for me. Doesn't seem right...we take our soldiers and Vets for granted and we shouldn't. What a special group of people...be safe and well!
I got a veterans day gift........Today a plane landed at Fayetteville, NC bringing my son in law home from Afghanistan for his midtour leave.......

all our prayers for traveling mercies were granted and he is home with my daughter where they will celebrate his return from 6 months active duty....and almost 7 months of their young marriage...

This will be a short 2 weeks for them both....and no, I didnt call to welcome him home........I think they got better things to do Big Grin.....I will speak with him tomorrow....but I give thanks tonight for both of them....and for both of their service in the US Army...and to our country...

For those here on the HSBBW who have served our country, I thank you...

For those whose loved ones are serving now or have served, I thank you...

For all the soldiers and veterans of our wonderful country, I thank you...

I can write these words today is because I have the freedom to do so to by the courage and bravery of our soldiers...

Let's try to make everyday veterans day...we owe our freedom to them...a freedom that many have made the ultimate sacrifice to protect.

Thank you
