Can I have an expert tell me what to expect over the course of the next few years in how D5 teams are affected in regular season scheduling? Football and baseball?
Specifically, Will Midlothian be drastically affected? Wont they still get to play a prdominantly Dominion District baseball and football schedule?? Thanks

My understanding is that districts will remain the same during the regular season. You can win a regular season championship, but no tournament. Once you get into post season it gets to be all about the divisions. (And I hate it.)

If I have this right -- and I'm not sure I do, so I hope someone who might know bettter will not hesitate to correct me as needed -- I think there will still be all-district teams but some things I've read indicate that the regional structures may cease to exist, so I'm not sure what will go on with individual honors at the regional levels. Presumably all-state honors will go out on a divisional basis, i.e., there'll be six sets instead of the current three.

The main impact on regular season will be the points system for determining post-season eligibility and seeding. This will affect what teams you'll want to schedule for your non-district regular season games. And that may mean some longer travel, depending on how your coach chooses to handle it.
To my knowledge, you have it correct. Districts will exist but you can schedule anyone you want. your seed in your conference will be determined by your overall record. Regionals pretty much no more. Everyone in conference makes conference tourney, top two teams from each conference on to regionals, and so on. To my knowledge the goal behind it is you play everyone in your district like usual and you fill the rest of your schedule with your conference if there are any differences. I am not sure i like the format either but I am willing to give it a shot. Not sure as of yet what is going on for all-region teams and so on. But pretty much you got it right on Midlo.

Districts are supposed to be unaffected, at least for now. You shouldn't be losing or replacing any district games.

Likewise, no one is saying you have to change any non-district rivalries you may have developed. The only thing is, your post-season seeding may depend on points you accumulate during the regular season, and this may induce people to schedule more strategically with an eye towards accumulating more points.
I agree that things won't change right away but at some point coaches may want to change their schedules. I can see a day where districts split into Div 5 and Div 6 which would allow them to free up scheduling slots if they don't play everyone Home & Away. So in a district with 10 teams evenly split the Div 6 teams could have 8 games with the other Div 6 teams Home and away and 5 games with the Div 5 teams playing them all once for 15 games in district.

That would free up 3 more games to play other schools so in the Tidewater area you'd get more games with Greenbrier Christian and with the interdistrict than is possible today.

I agree, although I'm not sure that Greenbrier Christian will be on the short list of games to be scheduled!

Given the way the points system works, I think you'll see some of the better programs "play down" at least a handful of games per year. Whether that means playing another D4, 5, or 6 program that is of lesser quality, or playing a Franklin, Currituck, etc. (smaller school), to theoretically guarantee a few wins.

Why someone in the SED would want to guarantee a few losses per year, having to play home and away against the likes of GB, NR, WB, and Hickory every year, in addition to the rest of the district...

It just makes sense that programs will break away and schedule some other games to help with their power ranking for postseason purposes.
Heels - that makes sense for Lakeland and Kings Fork but I am not sure IR or OS will travel that far. If they can get the schools to come to CHE that might happen.

FOR GB, WB, NR and Hickory I am thinking they'll play most anyone they don't think they'll play in the postseason.

The coaches hate to give away any secrets to each other. As if there were any!
