No requirement that I know of. There was a coach in the dominion district that taught at another school. Also, there have been middle school teachers that are varsity coaches. The majority of the time, they teach at the school they coach, but there is no rule against it as long as they teach in the county
The accepted rule that I know of is that teachers have first refusal rights...no takers...it's actively recruited as a normal form of employment and the school board is the higherer and firerererer. Brian Holt just took over the reigns at Colonial Heights...unfortunately he's inherited a not so talented pool of players, but he'll be better for the program in the future...he's a developer.
I think it is fairly common, particularly in NVa, for coaches, including head coaches, who are not teachers. It very could be if no teacher applies, then the school has to go outside the school system.
