If an umpire is standing in front of the shortstop, can the shortstop ask him to move, or is the SS forced to position himself around the umpire?

Politely ask him to move or have the coach do it.
....and if he refuses? Player ultimately has to just play around him, right?

In all my years of umpiring, I have never refused a request from a player to move...
That being said I can not disappear and depending on the runners on base I have to be on one side of the mound or another to properly work the game....
I have found that a step left or right and properly going to the "hands on knees" position almost always gives the fielders enough of a view to see/field easily.....
Any umpire that refuses a reasonable request to move is wrong.

As PIAA says moving shouldn't be a problem. What i usually tech my guys is to set up on a line from the plate to the edge of the mound. If a fielder or runner asks you to move do it along that line. Moving on the diagonal will move you out of the way and let you stay in the line that is prefered.
