My last inquiry to coach Hughes included these questions and answers:

2011 needs: arms, power corner bat, middles, true centerfielder - Academic standards (GPA / SAT): Tech is one of the top 30 public universities in the country, so the higher the better. We use 3.0/1000 as a starting point, but we’ll take someone lower if they really care about their academics.-Specific athletic standards: these don’t really work that well to answer in that format because there are other factors. Speed / 60: depends on position and what type of hitter the kid is, but we don’t like base cloggers anywhere. If you run a 7.4 you better hit it really far, very often. - Catchers POP: 2.0 or better - Pitchers MPH: depends on other stuff, life on fb, rhp or lhp etc. Avg on our staff is probably 89 - Intangibles: this is most important for us. We want tough, competitive kids that care about winning first and want to outwork everyone else. We want good teammates and kids that put the team first. We also want kids that are willing to do whatever they have to do to reach their potential on the field and in the classroom. - What events do you attend? Depends on what players are where and who we need to see. We go where the kids tell us they will be - The Program is fully funded
It would be very, very difficult to go wrong at Virginia Tech. I graduated from the school in 1977 and have derived a lifetime of benefits. My wife is a Hokie, as is my oldest son and daughter-in-law. Pete Hughes is a great coach and an outstanding individual. He is competitive, family-oriented and maintains very high standards. I feel compelled each year to donate to the program. But it is about so much more than baseball.

That sounds exactly like Coach Hughes. That is what he expects from himself and his coaches and what he expects from players as student athletes.
Kids on the baseball team get treated right. The added benefit of a good football is a very good training staff and on-campus support. My son felt the students were very friendly along with the staff. When he is on the west coast wearing something VT, other VT grads will stop him and chit chat.

The coach will do the right thing for your son, if he messes up there will be consequences even if he throws 95. Trust is very important to the coach.

The level of talent doesn't seem overwhelming.

-They play in the ACC. The ACC has excellent talent. My son played in the ACC and another top 10 D1 conference and said the ACC was much better from top to bottom, not even close. So what may look average in the ACC is well above average for most of the D1 conferences.
-There are alot of players from the last 3-4 years playing professionally.

The staff always developes talent, no matter the level.

I might add the medical and training staff are very good. As they have a legit D1 football team they also have some very good on campus services/facilities available to student athletes.
