Hello everyone. I'm a 2016 HS grad. I had a successful Freshman year as a mostly pitcher only. I will be pitching this weekend at The Go Yard showcase at The Yankees facility in Trenton NJ. I did this also last fall at the beginning of Freshman year. For my size and age I believe I did very well. The schools that were there gave me very useful advice and some very good reviews. This year Virginia Tech will be attending (Gabe Ortiz). I like the number of pitchers they carry and it doesn't seem like they recruit only pitchers that are 6'0" to 6'4". Any information or feedback would be great. In following the posts on here I do know there are some players that have attended VT.

FYI I'm 5'9" 135lb RHP. Topped out at 82 mph at Perfect Game 15yold tourn in Ft Myers.

I throw 4 seam, 2 seam, Change and slider. I can use any pitch in any count. Although learning to throw change for called strike is does have alot of movement down and in on a righty.

Thanks in advance.

Its true VT has had a broad range of pitcher sizes over the years.  If you have the tools to play in the ACC, its more about the fit then it is the size with the previous HC, and probebely the new HC.  However, you're still very young and don't really know where you will top out velocity wise.  You could ask  Ortiz what they are looking for in a 2015.  You could also send him an email in advance to let him know you are interested in VT and that you will throwing at the camp.

Good luck.

Hello NJ16 and welcome to the forum.

That is astute of you to notice the number of and more importantly the type of pitchers a school recruits. Some places do go for the tree toppers, and their roster looks like they could play for the basketball team based on their size.

When it comes to VT, the HC at the time(Pete Hughes)told us that he didn't care if the pitcher was 6'7" or 5'7", he just wanted kids that could throw strikes and compete. He also said that velo was important, but not the most important thing to him. At that time he mentioned that he only had one really big kid, and he was not one of their aces.

While he just left, I suspect a similar mentality still exists there. Also they are by no means the only school/staff that feel that way. Sure a lot of coaches look for the most projectible kids, but as long as you can get batters out, there will be a home for you somewhere to play college ball.

Keep working hard on your game and grades, and everything will take care of itself.
