My 2017 catcher turned down a top D3 school (offer/roster spot was inbound) to go try and go to my Alma Mater, Virginia Tech. He wanted a big in-state school experience and a top-notch education, and loves mountain biking and hiking, so VT top of his list. (And he does not have what it takes, mainly size, to play ACC baseball.)

I'm happy to announce that he just got accepted early decision to study finance. I expect he'll look hard at club baseball at VT, but it does seem like a very long time from now, with his senior of HS baseball to prepare for and enjoy.

But if anyone can chime in with what club baseball at VT (ideally), or college club baseball more generally is like, please chime in. Thanks!

Congrats to you  and your son.  That is great news.  My son has loved his time at VT, and I can't believe he is going to graduate in a few months.   It has been hard, fast and rewarding all at the same time for him.  He (and all his senior buddies) just got back from Orlando at the ACC championship football game.  There was a huge VT alumni presence and he ran into his future boss at one of the beer tents....they tossed back a few colds ones and he had a great time.  Once a Hokie always a Hokie.

Best of luck to your son and possible club baseball!  I hope it works out.

Congratulations to your son & the family on his acceptance to such a wonderful institution!  I have a senior there, as well, who made a similar decision, but with football though.  I do not know anything about the club team.

I do however know that several years back a NoVA kid was a bullpen catcher there for Coach Mason who was on the roster but strictly caught pens.  He was part of the team, but did not travel or play.

I am sure that your son probably wants to continue playing + I know bullpens take their toll, but he may want to consider talking to Mason to see if that is still a possibility.  Best of luck to him and hopefully whatever he chooses will be a really great experience @ Tech.  Let's go...HOKIES!

My son's best friend plays club at a D1 here in Ohio.  From what my son has said after watching them this fall it's pretty good baseball.  They practiced a couple times this fall and played a couple weekends....both out of town where they had to travel and stay in hotels.  The $$$ is all on the players....basically like travel ball.  They cover travel, uniforms and hotels while on road trips.  Not sure of the cost, but between fall and next spring, my son's friend told him that it ended up more $$$ than he had expected.   The varsity team does have a pitcher who played club his first two years.  He tried out for varsity fall of his junior year and actually threw 15-20 varsity innings last spring.  He'll get to throw more this coming spring.

Thanks for the responses. He's excited and happy to know where he's going next Fall.

I'm still thrilled he got in. VT is FAR more competitive than it was when I went in the Fall of 1985. My brother Steve did not get accepted just one year later and his SATs blew mine away...he transferred in one year later.

My son has joked about being a strictly bullpen catcher for VT...  I think he'd love to play, but he's very outgoing and makes friends and does sports wherever he goes, so if not baseball, it will be something else. Education comes first.
