I understand the weather is playing havoc with the VISAA Championship Tournaments, but the D2 tournament is taking shape.

#6 seed Christchurch School has earned a place in the Championship game by defeating #3 seed Greenbrier Christian by a score of 5-2 in the Quarterfinal round, behind a dominant pitching performance by Michael Taylor; and a 9-3 Semi-Final victory over #2 seed Steward School behind a masterful pitching performance by David Phillips.

The quarterfinal match-up with GCA was a real pitcher's dual until CCS opened up some breathing room late in the contest. In the semi-final, CCS jumped on top with a 2-out, 2-run rally in the first, followed up by a 3-run 2nd (3-run HR by Taylor). That proved to be all CCS needed, as the combination of strong pitching, timely defense, and 4 more runs slowed down a very strong Steward team.

CCS plays the winner of the Friday Semi-Final between #1 seed Atlantic Shores (4-1 victor over Middleburg Academy) and the winner of the Norfolk Collegiate & Covenant quarterfinal. I heard Covenant came out on top in that contest, but maybe somebody else can confirm this.

dblemup -- Good luck to the Panthers this weekend!

coach2 -- You got that right. I was not at the GCA game, but my sideline reporter told me GCA is a very solid team. Having seen both Steward and Atlantic Shores, they are both very solid and well coached teams also; and Coach Waite is doing a great job building a legitimate program at CCS.

Covenant School was crowned the VISAA D2 Champions as they defeated Christchurch School by a score of 3-0 today.

#8 Sean Rutherford (Sr, LHP) -- forgive me if I have his name wrong -- was the star of the game. Rutherford PITCHED a beautiful 2-hit shutout, and drove in the 1st (and winning) run on a double to the gap in the 3rd inning.

Congratulations to Covenant on a terrific win, and to Christchurch for making it to the Championship.
