Does anyone know how VMI's Matt Edwards (2005 Midlothian High grad) is doing? Has he recovered from his Tommy John surgery? Is he expected to pitch this year?

The VMI site has not yet updated its roster data from last year, but they do still have him listed on their roster.

This was a highly skilled guy who suffered a terrible injury caused by coaching stupidity. As a fan, I am hoping that he can join the long list of pitchers who have made it back from TJ. He has three seasons of eligibility left.

I remember that injury...it also sounded like Matt was determined to pitch through the pain...however, the coach is the one who ultimately put him in the game.

He is, however, listed on the 2008 Fact Sheet:

I, too, will be rooting for him...just as I do with many of the guys from the state legion tourney in 05.

I remember when he got hurt...if I remember correctly, you could see it coming reading through the newspaper articles about the team (and the use of the pitchers). But that doesn't change the fact that it nearly made me sick to the stomach when I read that he'd actually blown out the elbow. Like I said, you could see it coming, and he was run back out there again. Just a sad story of pitcher abuse. Hopefully he'll be healthy this year, as I think I remember him missing part of his freshman season for sickness as well.
I don't remember off hand how he was used in high school and his freshman year in college (he only threw 3.1 innings as a freshman in regular game action), but the injury happened during a run his American Legion team made to the American Legion World Series following his freshman year at VMI.

I believe there were three high quality pitchers on that team and they were all used heavily and almost exlusively during the run. Chris Duty is now at VMI with Edwards, and I want to say the third was Longwood's Phil Cerreto, but I'm not positive. If I recall, they basically had several rounds of tournaments at different levels (district, state, regional, national) within a short span, and these three guys shouldered most of the pitching duties.

Like I said, I can't speak to how Edwards was used previously, but I can remember that the way all three were used for that championship run was questionable.
The Legion team finished # 3 in the nation, but the coach had to resign because of this.

It's true the pitchers asked for the ball.

But adult authority should have intervened. That's what the adults are there for.

ANYWAY, I was really hoping that someone might provide us with some really good news on Matt Edwards. Don't we have some VMI fans on this board who can get us the scoop?

I saw the name Edwards in the RTD's box score of yesterday's VMI game. So, I just checked the VMI website to verify, and Matt Edwards did indeed make an appearance out of the bullpen in yesterday's 11-9 loss to Lafayette. His final line was 2 1/3 innings, 4 hits, 0 runs, a walk, and 2 strikeouts. I know it must have felt good to get back out there after what he's been through his first two collegiate seasons.
