JCBaseball,

What I am about to post below is from another HSBBW Old Timer on here named CBG that he wrote last summer in a discussion elsewhere about Vol State. My son did not play there last year so I can only tell you what I know about them now, which is I believe they will field a very competitive team this spring.

From CBG last summer:

2007 Volunteer State finished 2nd in the conference tournament.
2008 Volunteer State finished 2nd in the conference tournament.
2009 Volunteer State finished 1st in the conference tournament.

Mike Crossland (Volunteer State) has a way of getting his players ready for the conference tournament which is really the only thing that counts. Regular season play is great but if you don't win the conference tournament you cannot advance to the next round.

The only JUCO program in Tennessee that has done better in tournament play than Volunteer State the last three seasons would be Walters State.

Hope this helps!

My son LOVES the area. The apts he stays in is like 1000yds from a Wal-Mart, 200yds from an O'Charley's, 500yrd from an Zaxby's so he doesn't have to drive everywhere.

Coach Crossland is what you see. There are no pretentiousness about him whatsoever. If he tells you something, take it to the bank. My son tells me weekly that Coach Crossland is the best coach he has ever played for. That he is approachable and the players know they can come to him about anything.

If your son likes to fish, the school is literally located on the beautiful Cumberland river! They're only about 30min from Nashville as well.
Congratulations with signing with Vol State!

My son is a soph RHP this year and is one of the starting weekend conference pitchers. So I doubt they will ever get to meet unless you guys get down to watch any games.

A majority of the players stay at Littlestone at Village Green apartments. The amenities are 2nd to none there. I posted the link below. This is where Coach will most likely tell you to contact next summer.

I thought we had it bad being 5hrs away!

How did your son get recruited by a JUCO so far away? I'd love to hear the story!

A major league team recommended that we look at Vol State. My husband and son took a week and traveled to visit schools in NC and TN. Both really liked Vol State and Coach Crossland.

I think my husband and son may travel down this spring to watch some games. I probably won't get to see the school until we move our son down this fall.

I went to the website for the apartments. They do look really nice. I can't figure out if they are furnished or not?

BTW, hope your son has a great year. Looking to see them go all the way Smile
They are furnished with the normal things, i.e. refrigerator, dishwasher, microwave. The boys and their parents will figure out who they are rooming with in the late summer about the furniture, washer/dryer. Your son will of course need to bring his own bed, dresser.

What you may want to do is get with a returning player that probably already has couches, coffee table, washer/dryer already in place. Coach Crossland has been doing this quite a while. He's pretty close with the leasing Mgr of the apt and I think he may workup up apt roomate plans ahead of time.

I see your son is a catcher. That's good. We lose both our catchers this year so he has a pretty good shot at getting significant time behind the dish next year.

If you have any other questions now or later as the season progress, please feel free to send me a PM on here.
