Virginia Wesleyan won this evening 4-2 over Randolph-Macon in ODAC championship play. VWC will face last years champion, Hampton-Sydney, Friday at 7 p.m.

Zach Baker, First Colonial HS, took the win pitching into the 8th inning. He had 7 K's and scattered 4 hits. An outstanding job by the senior pitcher.

Other notables, Ricky Alred, FCHS, was 3 for 4, Matt Hudgins, Kellam was 1for 4 with a big hit to give VWC a 2-0 advantage. Brent Voyovich was also 3 for 4 with the key hit to score Brandon Hathaway and Mike Cardwell (PAHS). Hathaway and Cardwell made several defensive gems to hold off RMC.

Hopefully VWC can keep up the pace.

Update for VWC in ODAC action. Friday, April 29, 2006: Virginia Wesleyan Tops Hampden-Sydney 6-5 in Thrilling Night Cap

LYNCHBURG , VA – Virginia Wesleyan downed Hampden-Sydney 6-5 Friday night to remain undefeated in the 2006 Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) Baseball Tournament. Virginia Wesleyan jumped on HSC starter Jimmy Greene for a pair of runs in the second inning to open up an early 2-0 lead. Matt Hudgins doubled to start the inning and advanced to third when the ball was mishandled in the outfield. Allred followed with a single to plate Hudgins and eventually scored on a double off the bat of C.J. Rhodes.

Hampden-Sydney cut the deficit to 2-1 in their half of the second inning after Josh Michael drew a lead-off walk from VWC starter Wayne Renfrow, Kellam HS. Michael advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by David Toney and eventually scored on a passed ball. The Tigers took the lead at 5-2 with four runs in the home-half of the fourth-inning on the strength of a run scoring bases loaded walk, a fielder’s choice and a Toney RBI single.

In the VWC sixth inning, Mike Cardwell, PA high school, singled with one out, moved to second on a failed pick off attempt by Greene and scored on a double by Brent Vuyovich. Vuyovich moved to third on a single to the right side by Dan Sellers, Kellam HS, and came around to score on an RBI single by Hudgins, Kellam HS. A sacrifice fly off the bat of Allred, FC high school, to score Sellers knotted the game at 5-5. With the bases loaded and one-out in the top of the ninth inning for the Marlins, Phil Cadle,Great Bridge HS, laid down a squeeze bunt that was mishandled allowing Allred to score the go-ahead run.

Chris Rivera set down the side in the ninth inning to secure the win for the Marlins. Rivera tossed two perfect innings to even his record at 4-4. Greene took the loss that drops his record to 5-3. Greene went 8.1 innings, giving up nine hits and five earned runs while striking out seven.

With the win, Virginia Wesleyan moves on to face Bridgewater who is also undefeated at 11:00 a.m. Hampden-Sydney will take on Guilford at 3:00 p.m. in an elimination game.

Rivera’s Gem Leads Virginia Wesleyan Past Bridgewater 1-0

LYNCHBURG, VA – Virginia Wesleyan’s Chris Rivera (Chesterfield, Va./Meadowbrook), tossed a complete game, seven hit gem to lift the Marlins to a 1-0 over Bridgewater at the 2006 Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) Baseball Tournament. With the win, Virginia Wesleyan (21-20) advances to Sunday’s Championship Round which is slated for a 1:00 p.m. first pitch.

Rivera, who entered the game with a win and a save already in the tournament, struck out seven, issued one free pass and did not allow an Eagle runner to reach third base. VWC got the lone run of the game in the visitor half of the second inning when Ozz Dhramapitaksook (Springfield, Va./Lake Braddock) on a two-out bunt single and scored on a double by C.J. Rhodes (Williamsburg, Va./Lafayette).

Bridgewater (28-11-1) starter Matt Nolen was the tough-luck loser after surrendering just five hits and striking out six in a complete game effort. BC will play at 7:00 p.m. Saturday against the winner of Guilford and Hampden-Sydney.
