Walden Signs For $1 Million
May 30, 2007 11:47 am

Jordan Walden entered 2006 with the tag as the best high school prospect in the draft, not to mention seven-figure bonus aspirations. He had to wait a year, but Walden got his money Tuesday, agreeing to terms on a $1 million bonus from the Angels. He’ll sign the deal today, the deadline for clubs to come to terms with the last-ever crop of draft-and-follows.

After the Angels drafted the righthander in the 12th round last June, Walden turned down a scholarship from Texas and opted to attend Grayson County (Texas) Community College in order to keep his draft options open. Inconsistent as a high school senior, when his velocity dropped to 85-88 mph at times, Walden performed much better this spring. His fastball sat at 92-94 mph and peaked at 97. He also improved his slider and the command of his two primary pitches. He has a classic pitcher’s build at 6-foot-5 and 225 pounds.

Grayson’s coaches also got him to use his changeup more often and toned down his delivery, though it still has some stiffness. He closed his season by striking out 15 and carrying a no-hitter into the eighth inning of a regional playoff game.

Unless they’re still participating in the Junior College World Series, draft-and-follows must sign by 11:59 p.m. tonight or re-enter the 2007 draft. We’ll be monitoring the highest-profile draft-and-follows–such as righthanders Max Scherzer (independent Fort Worth Cats) and Matt Latos (Broward, Fla., Community College)–throughout the day and will present a complete signing list when it becomes available in the next couple of days.

No kidding............

Too bad the coach was terrible. That guy really needs to get a grip.

Heck, if they were that good, they should have won the Connie Mack WS.

Plus, he wouldn't even let his players attend showcase type events..........

It's amazing any of them were even noticed.

I wouldn't want my son to play for him that's for sure.

Congrats JW. Now the work begins. Wink

Only when my eyes have been closed It is very difficult with a two man crew which is what 100% of the schools use until the playoffs. I believe I only called three balks the entire year and that was for not coming set; two were in the same game.

I always feel the need to give the DBAT 2001 team props. I think this is still one of the best complements of a team. 2001 was 6 years ago and we had 18 players on this team. TODAY we still have today 10 players playing the game they love. Here is a where are they now.

1. Brad Furnish 2nd round draft pick: A-Ball for the St. Louis Cardinals.
2. Bryce Cox 2nd round draft pick: High A-Ball for the Boston Red Sox.
3. Zack Zorgovia 1st round (sandwich pick): AA-Ball for the Phillies.
4. Robert Ray 7th round draft pick: High A-Ball for the Toronto Blue Jays.
5. Jerrod Plummer 13th round draft pick: AA-Ball for the Kansas City Royals.
6. Chance Douglass 8th round draft pick: AA-Ball for the Houston Astros.
7. Trey Hearne 13th round draft pick: High A-Ball for the St. Louis Cardinals.
8. Jose Salazar 2nd Free Agent pick: A-Ball for the St. Louis Cardinals.
9. Matt Spencer: Independent Ball Fort Worth Cats.
10. Ty Wallace Redshirts Senior for Tulane.

And Ken we also did not make it to Farmington. The coach Sucked……

Still hoping that those 2 sorry coaches get together someday to see what could happen.

Could you imagine.......Gehrig, Gage, Griffis, and Guthrie. Eek

If those two coaches get together I'm going to be the Manager so I can assure other parents there will be no daddy ball.

Now that was a special team. They went like 65 - 10 over the summer. The coach sucked but later redeemed himself by leading the first 15U team to the MMWS in 2004.

SWAC,

Don't tell me those two would engage in daddy ball...or would they in 10 or 12 years?

Also, how can your new crop fully understand the heritage of those that went before them?

Because Cade and I sat at the deer lease one year and come up with one particular thing we will both do each and every single day.

Each day Gehrig and Gage will get a heavy dose of a$$ beatin'. Maybe they won't deserve it, but we shall give it to them for the things they might do. Big Grin Big Grin

And when we do it, we will make sure to tell them their dads were the best **** ball players/coaches this area has ever seen.

That's how they will know what came before them.

(and if there are any PETA folks here, this is obvioulsy a joke. Except for the a$$ beatin' part.)

(just kidding again, but not really)
As for special teams KCR, I would have to agree with your 01 bunch, as well as the 06 DBAT bunch... ours, by individual talent was our 2000 team that had
LHP Trey Taylor (sandwich pick between 1st/2nd)Baylor
LHP Zach Duke in 3rd season in the Majors with Pirates
LHP Bobby Livingston - made debut(with Dodgers) about 2 weeks ago
SS/OF Hunter Pence - made debut with astros in April, playing CF currently)
Todd Stroud -Texas A&M signee
Chris Schofield-UT Signee
Junior on that team was former 1st Round pick, Lance Broadway (AAA with White Sox)

Oddly enough KCR, our best "team" was the bunch you knocked out of AABC State in East Texas in 01? We went to the *if necessary* game....
