As I stated in a post about a month ago, my son has decided to go to nearby Div II school without any consideration about baseball. He is still hoping to get on the team by walking on. (He has met the coach in a camp he went to Summer 03)

He/we are currently working on an email/letter to the coach to see about the possibility of walk-on/redshirting his Freshman year.

Is there a limit to the number of redshirts a coach can carry?? Would a coach be more willing to allow a Freshman on the team if he offered to redshirt?? (I know all coaches are different).

Should redshirt even be mentioned by my son initially, or should he just address the fact that he wants to walk-on.

Thanks

Let me ask you this:

Does your boy think he is good enough to make the team?

If so why even mention redshirt !!!!
Go for the Gusto!!! Tell the coach he is attending the school and wants a fair shot in the fall tryouts---perhaps even have the coach see him play this summer

Yes the redshirt is an option but to ask for it up front before trying out will cast a shadow on whatever the boy does on the field during tryouts--be positive !!!! Asking for the reshirt is not positive !!!!
Thanks for the info!

Although seeing him play this summer is not an option since his summer ball is over and school starts in just over two weeks.

He will word his letter accordingly. However, eventually redshirting could be his best option as for the first year at least he will be taking minimum loads to get used to college workloads and if he does play ball will need to take minimum loads to keep the grades up, and therefore take 5 years to graduate.

Thanks again for the advice!

Correct. I was surprised to see that son's college recommends taking only 3 or 4 courses the first quarter because there is so much to get used to--being away from home, having a roommate, college reading loads, social adjustment, not to mention athletics. My son has a number of AP credits already (almost 2 full quarters worth), so I am pushing him to take only 3 classes first quarter.
Yes, at my son's school 12 hours is considered full time, and with his lab he'll be taking 13 hours first semester. I'm more than willing to pay for the extra year to give him the chance to do well and keep over a 3.0.

FYI, the coach did email back. He will not be holding fall tryouts, but will meet with him before school starts. So he's going to meet with him tomorrow! Crossing my fingers. :-)
Well, the meeting went well. Just a sit down talk. The coach told us he was pretty full, but did give my son the times to show up for physicals and fall tryouts. Also said that even if he didn't make the program, if he keeps his grades up, he has had some success placing guys at JUCOs for the spring semester, as their needs can change over the winter as JUCO grades are evaluated on a semester by semester basis.

We had a great morning at the campus. It was a beautiful day, got the business office stuff taken care of, and wandered around the campus, checked out the bookstore, checked out Leo III and UNA playing in their new habitat, found where the closest branch of his bank was, etc.

My son does not talk much or show emotions very much, but I could tell as we were walking around that he really liked what he saw and is going to like being there at the University of North Alabama.

Go Lions!
