What steps would you recommend for a D1 transfer to do if he is planning on walking on to another D1, specifically one in a more competitive conference than the one he was previously playing in?? Should he contact the coach and notify him that he will be attending the walk-on tryouts in order to better his chances?

First of all you need an release from the current school before you do anything

Assuming he has been released and is allowed to contact other coaches...what steps would you guys recommend

Yes, definitely let the coach know ahead of time.....he may even come in the summer or send somebody to watch the potential transfer play.
